Roger Hare Posted April 20 Posted April 20 (edited) I was getting fagged-out 'tidying-up' a large selection of Swiss tunes, so I decided to have a rest, and see if I could find any Easter tunes. I could only find one tune posted in the recent past - 'Easter Thursday' by 'Ptarmigan' a while back... There are surprisingly few (at least I was surprised). I came up with only about a dozen with some tenuous claim to an Easter connection (I left out a couple of obvious ones such as 'Week Before Easter'). ABC attached - make of them what you will... Anyone got any more Easter-related tunes? easter.abc Edited April 20 by Roger Hare
Peter Laban Posted April 20 Posted April 20 (edited) I am not convinced the mention of easter is enough to make a tune an Easter tune if there isn't any further connection to the celebration but I got a tune from Micho Russell at some point which he called 'the Happy days of Easter'. And perhaps a werk early but I also gave a jig 'Palm Sunday'. There is slso the sir "Easter snow', which has no connection to Easter but refers to a place in Roscommon instead. Steve Schulteis Posted April 20 Posted April 20 Tablature Lyrics Also included in Praise the Lord and Pass the Concertina. Perhaps not what you had in mind, but this is the most obvious one I've got. 2
Roger Hare Posted April 20 Author Posted April 20 (edited) Thank you folks! Already nailed 'Easter Hymn' (Buttrey MS) and 'Easter Eve' (Walsh, Compleat Country Dancing Master, 4th Ed., 1754). I'm now trying to track down Peter Cottontail... ...found it: Brilliant! Thank you! I've just realised I don't know how to post a link to a video - I do now... Edited April 20 by Roger Hare

How, please... I just paste the URL on its own line, hit enter, and after a moment it's automatically replaced with the embedded video. Depending on what privacy measures you have in place (e.g. disabling JavaScript), it's possible those might interfere.

Leonard Posted April 20 Posted April 20 (edited) If Easter Thursday is OK, Easter Tuesday should do as well: X:31 T:Easter Tuesday B:Dancing-master, or, Directions for dancing country dances (London; Printed by W.Pearson; 14th edition; 1709) S:NSL, Glen Collection of printed music. https://digital.nls.uk/89753429 N:"Longways for as many as will." I had spotted a different 'Easter Tuesday' in Playford Vol.2 (and in Walsh, Compleat Country Dancing Master, Vol. 3) with the alternate title 'White Hard Cabages'. The version you mentioned had passed me by though, so thank you for that! Edited April 21 by Roger Hare 1

wunks Posted April 21 Posted April 21 Thank you David! The bridge seems quite a challenge even for duet. Can anyone play it?

By “bridge,” I assume you mean the part that starts at 1:05 in the above video, with the words “On the avenue.” Judy is singing the song in Eb, which is a key I try to avoid on the 46-key Hayden, since it doesn’t have any real Eb’s (only two D#’s, one on each side, an octave apart, in awkward places for flat keys). So here’s what she sings (with chords and rhythm simplified—she’s actually singing in 12/8): X:1 T:Easter Parade bridge in Eb C:Irving Berlin M:4/4 L:1/8 K:Ebmaj e3/2e/2|"Bb"f3/2f/2 f6- | f6e2|f3/2f/2 f6- | f6f3/2f/2 | "C7"g3/2g/2g4f2 | "F7"=a2a4f2 | "Bb7"b2bBa2a2 | g3/2g/2_g2f2^f2 | And here it is down a half-step to D, how I would play it. X:2 T:Easter Parade bridge in D C:Irving Berlin M:4/4 L:1/8 K:Dmaj d3/2d/2|"A"e3/2e/2 e6- | e6d2|e3/2e/2 e6- | e6e3/2e/2 | "B7"f3/2f/2f4e2 | "E7"^g2g4e2 | "A7"a2aAg2g2 | f3/2f/2=f2e2^e2 |
wunks Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Thanx David. The melody's easy enough in any key, even Eb. I like it in Bb and D works as well. Erik
