VIN Posted February 25 Posted February 25 Just received a set of pads and valves from C A Cornish for my project and they do look very good, moving on I wonder if anyone would be able to let me know where I might acquire end plate bushings or failing that where I might be able to buy the correct felt and appropriate punch size many thanks for any input , vin ( it would be nice to be in a position to give advice as opposed to always needing it but I can’t really see that time ever coming!!
Tiposx Posted February 25 Posted February 25 I think you refer to the bushings that go around the buttons where they go through the end plate? If so you need “piano bushing felt” which can be bought from a piano repair shop. I think I bought mine from PSC music. I have it in 3 thicknesses, .8mm 1mm & 1.2mm. You don’t use a punch, just cut strips about 3mm wide.Cut the lengths from your strip to fit the hole whilst allowing the button to slide nicely. When you have found the length you need it is a nice easy job. You need a light smear of glue in the hole to attach the felt ring you have made. I use wheat glue, or a mix of wheat glue mixed with a trace of pva if necessary. 1

DDF Posted February 25 Posted February 25 It would be worth you getting a copy of Dave Elliots book(The concertina maintenance manual). It explains clearly what you need and how to do it. regards David. 1
Tiposx Posted February 25 Posted February 25 I agree that Dave Elliott's book would help. I don't worry about the bias, and the bushings have always looked good and worked well.
Theo Posted February 25 Posted February 25 Cutting on the bias is best, it helps to eliminate fraying from the cut edges. 1
VIN Posted February 25 Author Posted February 25 I feel really silly now but I have to admit that I have just looked in Dave Elliott’s book which I have owned for years and yes it dose cover bushing, apologies to all 1
Duncan Luddite Posted February 26 Posted February 26 G'day @VIN, Billiard table felt is a woven felt (around 1mm thick) that works very nicely for various concertina bushings. I've used it for punching out the 5mm diam. under key circles, and for lining the key cross holes for the pad control bars to pass through (all set up as d.elliott describes in his book). Find a billiard table repair shop and nicely ask if they have any offcuts for sale. A cheap way to get *all* the felt you need. They quite probably will have a number of colours as well. I found one local to me and now have two strips of red felt, about a hand span wide, and four feet long Lifetimes supply. 1
d.elliott Posted March 1 Posted March 1 I tried Billiard table baize and found it too coarsely woven, or perhaps I was unluck (cack handed).
Chris Ghent Posted March 2 Posted March 2 A lot of billiard table baize is no longer wool based. This puts me off it but even good quality wool baize seems to commonly have a synthetic warp and weft, only the filling is wool.
Rod Pearce Posted March 2 Posted March 2 I have used this Piano Bushing cloth, which comes in several thicknesses. Dimensions of the cloth are 75 mm X 915 mm. https://www.pianoaccessoryshop.co.uk/product/bushing-cloth-strips-0-85mm-1-8mm-for-flange-keys/ I chose the 0.85mm thickness for the button bushes, but have not had a need for the frame end holes. Now priced at £15.95
