Ed Nardell Posted February 15, 2025 Posted February 15, 2025 (edited) I ordered this very nice Concertina case 5 months ago soon after I ordered a new Stagi Hayden Duet Concertina. However, the Stagi never arrived (manufacturing delays) and I ended up canceling the order and ordering a new Concertina Connection Phoenix instead - which is due next week. The Phoenix is smaller than the Stagi and comes with a case, so I no longer have use for this Viking VCC-40 case - sized for the Stagi. I am selling it at a loss in hopes that someone can use it. Price: $135.00 (what I paid plus shipping) Qty: Zoom In Viking VCC-40 Concertina Case, Std Good quality wooden case, will fit Stagi and Scarlatti concertinas Item ID: GR48877 Model No: VCC-40 Product Features Rugged plastic cover protection. Black leatherette covering Black cushioned lining A good solid feeling case Product Specifications Approx Internal Dimensions: Height: 16cm Width: 23cm Depth: 17.5cm Made in: Vietnam Edited February 21, 2025 by Ed Nardell clarification
Ed Nardell Posted February 21, 2025 Author Posted February 21, 2025 Not sure how to withdraw this ad. The Stagi concertina that I ordered has finally arrived from Italy and I'll keep the case and the Stagi for now. 1

David Colpitts Posted February 22, 2025 Posted February 22, 2025 Ed, I am curious about how you like the new Stagi Hayden. They are, of course, the least expensive option in a "full compass" Hayden these days.
Ed Nardell Posted February 23, 2025 Author Posted February 23, 2025 David, I will let you know - in the US but still not in my hands. In a bit of exuberance I also have a custom Peacock coming from concertina connection - due in a few weeks. I do split my time between two locations, so the plan is to leave the Stagi on Cape Cod and keep the Peacock in Brookline. There is a big difference in price and attention to detail, so I expect a big difference in the feel, sound, and responsiveness of the instruments. Stay tuned.
Ed Nardell Posted February 28, 2025 Author Posted February 28, 2025 David, After 5 months of anticipation, and listening to concertina music, I finally laid hand on a duet concertina today! My first impression is that, given the limited choices and availability of Hayden duet instruments, the Stagi seems to be well made, nicely finished, in tune, and an ideal first instrument for the money - with one reservation. I am sure it will not compare to the Custom Phoenix 42 button (Concertina Connection) when it arrives, although it does have the full 46 buttons as you know. My reservation is, as you previously suggested, the button positions relative to my big hands. It is extremely premature to be sure if it my hands or the distances of the slant array of buttons from the straps, but right now if my hands are fully inserted, it is difficult to curl fingers to reach the close rows. Were I to withdraw my hands so I can easily curl to reach the close rows of buttons, then it is hard to reach the far row. I have long hands and fingers. I wish that the buttons were further away and not slanted - but I'm sure I'll make it work. Based on my work with the iPAD app, I can play some simple tunes - so far on the right - but the chords on the left aren't difficult. The concertina case I bought was advertized as accomodating the Stagi, but it would not fit the strap support blocks - so the store is accepting the return. The Stagi comes with a padded gig bag which will do for now. The Stagi gives me something to work on till the Pheonix arrives - soon William says - but overdue. Ed
David Colpitts Posted March 1, 2025 Posted March 1, 2025 Thanks, Ed, for the update. Glad the Stagi looks promising, and I hope the Phoenix's arrival does not make the Stagi suffer too much by comparison. While I have the "Hayden-specific" old Bastari 46 button, and love it, I never thought the Stagi was bad on its own; other more experienced Hayden players are probably more critical of the odd slants and spacings of the Stagi. Probably a good idea to keep them in two places! And, as far as hand and finger fit, curling, reaching rows goes....there are threads on here about such, and modifying the handrest rails (angles, height, and some cool stuff about shapes) that might be of interest while you await the Phoenix. I wish you well with your new instruments. David

Presumably you mean the Peacock, which is a 42 button Hayden. I have one, and I had a Stagi for about a year before that. So I'd be interested to hear your comparison.
