Jody Kruskal Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 (edited) I just occurred to me today; the Wayfaring Stranger song might be a good fit for me. I've known it since forever... but never tried to sing it on concertina before. First, I got some lyrics from mudcat.org. Then I watched this: WOW! What am I getting myself into? David Barnert Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 This is where I learned it from, way back in the 1960s. Considerably less complicated. Good luck.
Tiposx Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 The Tony Rice version is a bit twiddly. It might be satisfying for the virtuoso, but as a listener I would prefer a simpler arrangement.
John Wild Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 (edited) Jody, you referred to the wayfaring stranger song. I just listened to an elaborate instrumental piece. Is it actually a song with words? Sorry if i am showing ignorance here. Edited December 21, 2024 by John Wild

I listened to the video Jody posted waiting for someone to open up their mouth and start singing. Listen to the video I posted, above. Edited December 21, 2024 by David Barnert
Don Taylor Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 I liked the bit during that long intro when the guy at the back on the LHS looks at his watch and decides that he has lots of time to take a couple of drinks.
hjcjones Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 It does go nicely on anglo. I prefer this version by Rhiannon Giddens and Phil Cunningham: 4

For your video, my screen shows the message this video is unavailable. Clicking on the play arrow leads me into the Youtube home screen. I have now viewed the video posted by Howard Jones, and realise I have heard the song before. It is good.

Anyway, a man and a banjo, somewhat faster than the Rhiannon Giddens version, but you get the idea. 1
Tiposx Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 The Giddens/Cunningham arrangement is tasteful. I might even be able to play it!

She just keeps playing the same six-note motif (C G Bb/ G/ F C4) over and over, no matter what the harmony is asking for. The magic is not in the notes, but the delivery. 1
