Having bought an old concertina without a storage case (hereafter referred to as the Case), and wanting to protect it, I decided to make one out of plywood.

I like the form of the old hexagonal Cases, but as has been pointed out in various places, storing your concertina on end is no good for the valves. So I went with making it definitely designed to lay on one of it's sides. It has a leather carry handle on one side, and four rubber feet on it's opposite side.
This will be put up in several parts, over the next while, as we have sorting out to do here in prep for Christmas celebrations, so this is more a teaser of the finished project :)

The first photo of the velvet inside is with the flash on, the second inside shot is what it looks like to the unaided eye; dropping down into intergalactic depths :D

The catch is cut from thick brass sheet with a soldered on brass raiser around the pivot so that it doesn't rub on the box. The shape was for purely ergonomic reasons (comfort in opening and closing). The fact that it looks like a quaver is purely accidental; but I'm not complaining. It has three notches on the tail so that if it gets caught while moving the Case about, there are two 'safeties'.

The concertina is an easy fit and slides out smoothly, when the box is tilted, for removal. When the lid is closed there is no end to end movement of the concertina when tipped back and forth, and if the case is left sitting with the catch undone, the concertina pushes it open a fraction.
Cheers, and all the Best for the Holiday Season and the New Year.

Very nice job. What material/board is the velvet attached to?

Thanks everyone.
Tiposx, The outer shell is 7mm Pine Ply, and the velvet is pasted to 3mm Hardwood ply and wrapped over bevelled edges. I'll give a fuller description with photos after Christmas. Too much happening now :)

Cheers

Wheatstone early 1900s Aeola cases were made of leather and cardboard with some of them being leather and very thing wood/plywood.  I hope to reproduce a few of them in the next couple of months.  I’ll be watching this thread with interest to get some ideas.  Thank you!
