nkgibbs Posted November 11 Posted November 11 It might just be a case of 'getting out more' but I hadn't come across this 'maker's' label before.
Stephen Chambers Posted November 13 Posted November 13 There's another one, fancier with fretcut rosewood ends, in the Horniman Museum collection: Anglo-German system. Serial number 59258. Oval paper dealer's label: 'J. Hinton, Maker and Repairer, 182 Bromsgrove Street, Birmingham.' 6.19" diameter, flat rosewood ends, fully fretted, bevelled, red leather backing. Later straps, one original brass screw, trade mark on right-hand hand bar. Five-fold black leather bellows with gold star papers. Round-end steel reeds.
nkgibbs Posted November 14 Author Posted November 14 Many thanks Stephen, #54113 is the twin of the Horniman #59258 and both c1879? Strangely, no STEEL REEDS mark on #54113 but they are steel! Best wishes, Neil

That doesn't surprise me at all, the mahogany-ended ones with spindle-cut fretwork were available with brass or steel reeds, which made the STEEL REEDS mark important, to differentiate between them, but the rosewood-ended "Newly Improved" ones, with hand-fretcut ends, were only available with steel reeds - making the distinction unnecessary. It would not be untypical for early examples to not be so-stamped, and of the three 20-key "Newly Improved" Anglos that I have at the moment, neither 81498, nor 141666 is stamped STEEL REEDS, but 165979 is... Davelee Posted November 18 Posted November 18 I have a 20 button John Hinton in my collection. No 46877. When I did some research some years ago he started off as an apprentice carpenter (1871) following censuses he was either dealer or maker. He died young 49 in 1899. Dave 2
