Jody Kruskal Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 (edited) Sandy Boys - Jody Kruskal plays this fine old time fiddle tune on the Anglo concertina. We know this one from the playing of fiddlers Edden and Burl Hammons, Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Don Taylor Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 From Jody's link: How should the first 2 (or is it 4?) notes in the second bar be interpreted?

E played on the A string and concurrently open E string. (This is a fiddle we’re talking about, not a concertina). 1
Jim Besser Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 (edited) Love the unrushed pacing. So much oldtime is played at breakneck speed; your rendition gives the tune a chance to breathe. Edited August 14, 2024 by Jim Besser 2
Jody Kruskal Posted August 14, 2024 Author Posted August 14, 2024 Thanks Jim, I do love to breath... at any speed. As for the link with notation, I wouldn't put too much stock in written notes, as helpful as they may be in learning a tune. Rather, I like to listen to how folks actually play it, then play along with the versions I most admire. These selections are all from the university of Youtube where you can slow down the tune to better join in the fun. (Click the Settings button, the little gear icon at the bottom, then Playback Speed, then .75 or even .5) Here are a few of my favorite listens for Sandy Boys.
