SteveFile Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 (edited) Now in the FOR SALE forum. This is a Lachenal 89 key Maccann duet concertina serial number 1734. As far as I can see it's a pretty unusual beast and I have been trying to find out more about it but without much luck so far. The condition of this concertina is as follows, one key on the left hand side is not working and there are a few others that are out of tune. The 8 fold bellows are in good condition with no air leaks. What date might this instrument have been built and does anybody know of any others like this out there? Thanks for any info in advance. alex_holden Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Looks very impressive! How big is it, what is the range of each side, and do you have any pictures of the internals?
SteveFile Posted August 1, 2024 Author Posted August 1, 2024 Thanks for the dating info and I will put up some images of the internals together with external dimensions. 1
Mike Acott Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 Hello Wes, here are two more numbers for the records the first is a baritone 12814 rosewood ends and brass reeds the second is labeled as a Louis Lachenal treble 18864 , rosewood ends with brass reeds . regards. Mike 1
wes williams Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 Hi Mike, Don't understand why you've added this here. Was it a mistake and were you after date estimates? I assume they are 48K? If so 12814 is estimated as circa 1867, and 18864 is circa 1873, right at the end of the Elizabeth Lachenal period. Steve - This concertina is already on the Lachenal database. Past history says it's been through Chris Algar, and also on ebay.
SteveFile Posted August 4, 2024 Author Posted August 4, 2024 Dimensions and weight. Length (end plate to end plate, bellows closed) = 22cm Height = 26.5cm Width = 31cm Weight = 4Kg
alex_holden Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 Very interesting, thanks. It is the same physical size as an 82b (81 notes + air) Lachenal Maccann I have worked on, and the reed pans share many similarities. On the 81 note version of the design, the left hand is missing the four inner chambers near the thumb hole, and the right hand is missing the three chambers in the middle of the bottom row. I'm not sure what the extra notes are. It looks like they are probably in the overlap region.
SteveFile Posted August 11, 2024 Author Posted August 11, 2024 Thanks to all for the interest and input. I will be putting this concertina up for sale shortly.
