springer52 Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 Anyone know a good (quality!) supplier of leather valves in the UK? I need to replace a few valves in my Crane Duet but I notice that Mark (Concertina spares) is no longer trading, at least not currently. I know Wheatstone may be an option but is there anywhere else selling quality parts in the UK? I don't mind paying top prices as long as the quality is equally high. Thanks for any help.
Oberon Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 He's not in the UK, but Wim Wakker sells appropriate spares and he will dialogue with you about what you need if you want to confirm anything. You can find the spares here: https://www.concertinaconnection.com/spares.htm He's always been incredibly helpful when I've ordered spares, and the costs are reasonable. Also, Sandylaneman in Ireland offers various spares. I've contacted him directly before and he was able to provide valves I needed but did not have listed on eBay at the time. You can find his profile on this listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115534703391?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=pG7iC6oCQBy&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=3UxLqwikRkK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Alex West Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 (edited) In the UK, you can get supplies from some of the makers, eg Dipper, Wheatstone, Norman and possibly others as well as Mark at Concertina Spares. Alternatively, C A Cornish supplies - see https://www.cacornish.co.uk/musical-instruments/. I believe they were introduced to the concertina by Dave Elliott Alex West Edited March 22, 2023 by Alex West Spelling mistake
Paul_Hardy Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 I have just returned from the WCCP Halsway concertina weekend in Somerset, where Steve Dickinson (who is the Wheatstone company), had stepped in at short notice to be the resident repairer. He was funded by the WCCP to do quick fixes, and he replaced and retuned (at no cost) the tongue of a cracked reed for me, and provided some other small components. He was very helpful with advice, and through his website can provide any concertina spares of top quality. See http://wheatstone.co.uk/. For a quote, just email him - concertinas@wheatstone.co.uk.
springer52 Posted March 22, 2023 Author Posted March 22, 2023 Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. Steve Dickinson of Wheatstone did the original restoration work on my Duet many years ago. I hadn't realised he is still the owner of Wheatstone all these years later. That's good news. I've bought stuff from Mark (Concertina spares) in the past and he's always been great but now sadly his online shop says he's taking a break for a while. I hope he'll decide to come back one day as he has done a brilliant job all these years. He'll be missed! The other names mentioned are new to me so I'll add them to my contacts list. Thanks again. Very much appreciated.
Sandy Winters Posted April 8, 2023 Posted April 8, 2023 Steve Dickenson is a prince......always very helpful. I just spoke with him yesterday.
