Rosewood & Brass concertina case for auction in UK

A very nice looking Rosewood & Brass, lined, case is listed for auction on 8th March at MALLAM'S of Oxford.

No carrying handle visible and no mention of a key for the lock.

The case is very much in the style of the "campaign furniture" that was popular in the 19th century with army officers/explorers/missionaries for use "on the move". The brass strapping reinforced the item, and also kept it together if the hide glue melted in the heat of the tropics.

 

There are concertinas that were made with reinforced corners too, and bowl-back mandolins with screwed-on metal strapping to try and keep their necks in alignment.

It looks very much like a Stagi, and I see the picture was painted in 1999.

Its not a bad price for the box; although I always think that it is easier to get instrument out of a square box, as you have spaces at corner to lift out without too tight a fit. ( As in this box)!

Well, the box sold for £110, hammer price ( = £143 with buyers premium & tax)

 

The painting sold for £280, hammer price ( = £364 with buyers premium & tax)

A bit late to the game on this one, but here's my mid-C19th EC with 'campaign' corners (as per Stephen Chamber's post above). The maker's label is lost. Ironically it comes with a plain and battered mahogany box, which I suspect is original to the concertina.
