And area you do not wish to be eaten away by the acid is protected by a wax layer, or stopping out varnish.. this is a black sort of paint; or can even be a crayon like block, rubbed onto a heated plate, where it melts, and once cooled, the layer can be scratched into, so leaving the acid to eat into only the open metal area of design.. whereas the wax that is left, prevents the acid biting.
