To Makers; how does players' hand size determine button spacing, or does it matter?

This comes to mind when I try out an unfamiliar instrument. I must say my late Crabb Anglo is very comfortable, but the Rochelle, I used have, was not! And my newer rig, a splendid modern make, feels tighter than the Crabb.

 

Wondering if there are set patterns for small - medium - large,  hands?

Not exactly. Mine are all tailored to the client's preferences. Sometimes that means closely matching their existing favourite instrument, other times it means going tighter or wider to better suit their hand size and playing style. You also have to consider button diameter and top profile, and its effect on the edge-edge spacing.

Our small instrument is best suited for small to medium hands. It is what I play. Our Noel Hill model is just a little larger in terms of spacing and can fit most hand sizes. Our standard model can be ordered with an adjustable, sliding handbar which can pretty much fit all sizes. Another option for larger hands is to go with a taller handbar.
