Northern California Concerts June 24-26,

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Richard Goldberg posted details about this weekend's workshop with Gearoid O hAllmhurain which he is hosting in SF (now full). I wanted to post details about Gearoid's concerts as well and encourage list members in the neighborhood to stop by :)

This weekend Cape Breton pianist Barbara MacDonald Magone and All-Ireland Concertina Champion Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin are presenting three Bay Area concerts of Irish and Cape Breton music marked by musical virtuosity and historical anecdotes. Well-known to both Scottish and Irish audiences, they have performed on three critically acclaimed albums together and in countless recitals and festivals. Their performances are wonderful for the whole family, especially the afternoon Cupertino house concert and the Berkeley venue.

Musician Highlights:

"Barbara IS the living tradition," says legendary Irish fiddler James Kelly, 'and the music she makes compliments the great and ancient traditions of Scotland and Ireland - a rare musician indeed." A superb Cape Breton-style pianist, Barbara MacDonald Magone featured in three Masters of the Folk Violin tours (Smithsonian / National Council for the Traditional Arts). She appears often with fiddlers ALASDAIR FRASER and the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers, and occasionally with Liz Carroll, Séamus Connolly, and James Kelly.

A fourth generation musician and a native of County Clare, Dr. Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin holds five World Championship Irish music titles: as a concertina player, uilleann piper, and as a member of the renowned Kilfenora Céilí Band. Based at University of Missouri-St Louis and author of "A Pocket History of Irish Traditional Music" (Dublin: O'Brien Press, 1998), ‘Professor’ Ó hAllmhuráin is notably the only traditional musician to hold a North American university Chair of Irish Studies. He will also be teaching at the annual Catskills Irish Arts Week and Festival in July and the Minneapolis Irish Festival in August. Please see websites for details.

Thank you!

All the best,

Cecilia McDonnell
