New Sherwood concertinas?

Recommended Posts

As I mentioned in the Current makes of concertina thread, it looks like Hobgoblin will be selling concertinas under the Sherwood name.

If I remember correctly, the Sherwood that used to exist was designed for Pete McClelland (of Hobgoblin) and was based on the Norman (successor to Ashdown).

But I think these new Sherwoods are much cheaper and different.

Does anyone have any information on them?

It sounds like they've got three different samples from a manufacturer, and that they are only for evaluation at the moment - that's how these things are usually done...

There are photos of the beech wood one on the Hobgoblin Music (Brighton) Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/hobgoblinmusicbrighton/posts/4800691606667243

And there's a YouTube video of it:

Thank you Stephen for letting me know. I'm curious if there are any differences other than the reeds being made in the Czech Republic compared to the Sherwood with Italian reeds that once existed, especially in the action mechanism.

I fear you may be assuming too much based on the Sherwood brand name, which hasn't only been used for concertinas from Hobgoblin/Gremlin - there are Sherwood stringed instruments, and melodeons, too!

Times, technologies, and sources of parts, have galloped ahead in recent years, as has manufacturing in countries that only made concertinas of "toy" quality a few years ago, so I wouldn't expect any great similarities to what has gone before.

Hobgoblin's web page has been updated to state that all three models of Sherwood (Kirkless, Flynn, Marion) are made in China.
