conzertino Posted February 15, 2022 Posted February 15, 2022 I noticed this Eddy at auction. I'm not sure what kind of system it is. I guess that it could be a Jeffries duet!? Link
David Barnert Posted February 15, 2022 Posted February 15, 2022 I know very little about Jeffries Duets, but that would be my first guess, too. The pictured price list includes a 58-key Duet, and this one has 58 keys. I know of no other duet system with curved rows like an anglo. Someone with more familiarity with Jeffries Duets should be able to say whether the chord diagrams in the pictured open notebook make sense on a Jeffries Duet.
David Barnert Posted February 15, 2022 Posted February 15, 2022 Just saw this topic also recently posted about the same item. Everyone seems to agree: Jeffries Duet, however unusual for Lachenal.
Peter Smith Posted February 15, 2022 Posted February 15, 2022 I agree. It looks like a Jeffries Duet. I asked the auction house whether the concertina played a different note on each button when pushing & pulling the bellows and was told by someone there 'I would say a different note'. Perhaps a little inconclusive, so is it an anglo?

I've just counted the buttons and it's a 51 button.

You’re right. I just counted, too. I was going by the description at the head of the web page: AN EARLY 20THC LACHENAL & CO 58 KEY CONCERTINA CASED WITH PAPERWORK
wunks Posted February 15, 2022 Posted February 15, 2022 I count 53. Thumb key on left hand side ( usually F# for a c core instrument) and thumb key on the right for air is less visible.

I think we need the push pull info to be sure.
gcoover Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 100 percent certainty it is a Jeffries Duet - the chords in the homemade book are an exact match. With luck we'll know a lot more about it in the next few days. Gary
wunks Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 Beg pardon Gary but the home made chord book may not match the instrument. I have one myself from my Wheatstone JD and it doesn't match up. The one in the photos doesn't match the instrument either. Seller is claiming a 58 button JD. the photos show 53 buttons. The book looks to be for a 50 button +air, not a bespoke item. It sure looks like a JD but we'll see.....
Stephen Chambers Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 I've already commented in the other thread that the chord book looks like a typical Jeffries handwritten one (I have several of them!), and that (+ the Jeffries Bros. Price List) makes me think the original buyer of the Edeophone probably already had a Jeffries duet.
david robertson Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 Hammer price £2200 - that's about £2750 with buyer's premium (don't get me started!) It's a beautiful instrument, but isn't that a bit lofty for an unrestored Jeffries Duet?
gcoover Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 Not too lofty for a certain JD player in Honolulu - this rarity gets to go to Hawaii! It will also be making the trip to Texas for the Old Palestine concertina weekend on March 25-26 if anyone wants to see it up close and play it. Excited too about that Jeffries price list, but I'm thinking maybe it should end up somewhere like the Horniman Museum? Gary 5

gcoover Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 (edited) Only two this week! One of the side benefits of Concertina Acquisition Syndrome is The Wife not noticing anything additional... G Edited February 17, 2022 by gcoover 1
Richard Mellish Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 Congrats Gary. I'm delighted this one is going to a good home, with one of the rare breed who play that system. Let us know how much or little work it needs to get it to top condition.
Luke Hillman Posted February 18, 2022 Posted February 18, 2022 What a pretty box that is. Hope you're going to post some videos, Gary.
