Import duties to the UK?

Does anyone here know what import duties will be charged if an American sells a vintage UK-made instrument to someone in the UK?  Some prospective buyers have expressed concern about the added cost.

I believe it is something like

Approx 4% tariffs on the value of the goods

20% VAT on the value of the goods, insurance and shipping, and I believe the tariffs

Courier fees

However there may be some form of reduction in this if the item is an antique, that is over 100 years old - and you'll need to be able to prove it.

Steve's figures are broadly correct. When I was involved in a similar transaction some years ago, the import tarriff was 3.8%. It may have changed since them.

It is important to know that the 20% VAT is calculated on the purchase price PLUS the import duty.

I bought some auto parts from England and one of the parts was incorrect. It was a small item no bigger than a pack of cigs. UPS and FedEX wanted over 100 bucks to ship it BACK to England. Ridiculous.
