Alex Signell
I'm a beginner player who is looking to upgrade from an old East German Anglo, I found a Wheatstone May Fair Anglo selling for about $1100 and I was wondering if this concertina was any good and if it was a fair price for it. Or if anyone has some recommendation for other 30 key Anglos, preferably a little cheaper.
gcoover
That sounds too high to me, for that price maybe get a new McNeela Swan or Blackthorn? I'm sure (and hoping) others will chip in about what else might be good at that price point. Gary
wunks
There's a Marcus 30button C/G on the western Mass. Craigslist that's been there for a while at a very good price if it checks out. Right in your back yard if you're here in New York. I've no affiliation with the seller. 🙂

Stephen Chambers
If it's in good, playing, condition then buy the May Fair - they're excellent for the price, and that's the going rate for one.

I agree with Stephen. I have a May Fair and have played a Swan. I think the Swan is a decent instrument for the price, but I think a May Fair is better if it's in good condition. The problem is, it would be very difficult for Alex (a beginner player) to tell if the May Fair is in good condition or not. I believer no one in this forum would be able to give good enough advice without seeing and touching the real instrument. For this reason, I did not go for old instruments but chose brand new one from Concertina Connection. As suggested by Gary, McNeela Swan is below your budget and I have one, but I feel that quality control of McNeela is not that excellent and aftercare service is no good either. Still, it may be a good idea to try Swan as it has full refund policy (you have to pay return p&h though). Good luick and a happy new year! Theo
If the May Fair is being sold by a business that specialises in vintage concertinas and is guaranteed by them then its ok, for a private sale with no backup then the price is on the high side. d.elliott
Mayfair's are good instruments and a lot more maintainable than many accordion reeded instruments. I tend to feel that the price is a tad on the high side, it would need to have been serviced, all the tuning tweeked as needed etc to justify that sort of money
