Instruction Books for Concertina

For those looking for concertina instruction, here is a master list of all known concertina instruction and tune books currently available in paperbacks, downloads, ebooks, DVDs and websites offering instruction, for all types of concertina. This list is intended to be as inclusive as possible and will be updated as new information and new books become available.

Over 250 tutors for the various types of concertina have been published since 1840, and well over 60 are still available today by direct online download, hardcopy paperback from online and brick & mortar specialist retailers, Kindle format from Amazon, and sometimes in paperback directly from the authors. Active links are included for many of the older historical tutors which are freely available as digital downloads.

All of the books show the “dots” in standard music notation, often melody line only.

For the Anglo, many books also show various forms of tablature:  alternate visual and coded lines, numbers and symbols to indicate button numbering and bellows direction. Since Anglo tutors by different authors often utilize completely different numbering and tablature systems, a very brief description of the particular system used is also included in the listing. Most indicate push or pull (in/out, press/draw etc.) using characters (^), letters (P, D), dots (.), lines (  ̅  ̅  ), or a host of other symbols.

Gary has been working with us at C.net on this project for some time and has put a lot of effort into drafting and revising the list. I want to be the first to thank him for this effort. I have more of these books than I would have guessed, and got to check a few details for him.

I will pin this thread and Gary plans to update it, similar to the way Daniel Hersh maintains the "Current Makes of Concertina" list in the General Discussion forum.

Fantastic resource! Thank you for compiling this.

A small addition to the 20-button list, and a personal favorite of mine:

Merrill's Harmonic Method (1872) - https://archive.org/details/merrillsharmonic00merr

And while I was looking for that, I found this for English (which I don't play):

The Concertina Without A Master (1857; Case, Sedgwick, & Ruttinger) - https://archive.org/details/concertinawithou00case

Ives, P., The Anglo Concertina. See https://www.pipives.co.uk/tutor_book.html.

Alan Day's tutorial is available (perhaps more conveniently?) from:

This zipped download is maintained by Don Taylor, a frequent contributor to this forum

Thanks to all for your helpful input and comments. I've added the new ones in, and hopefully made all the links active for the free downloads.

There are some books that are obviously/unfortunately missing from this list:  Bertram Levy's The Anglo Concertina Demystified will soon be available again, as will Dan Worrall's The Anglo Concertina Music of William Kimber. I reached out to Richard Carlin about his history-filled English Concertina book, but at the present time he is not interested in reprinting it.

Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne is working on a very impressive Anglo tutor that should be out in the next few months, and The Anglo Concertina Music of John Kirkpatrick will be available early next year. Judy Hawkins is working on a Hayden Duet tutor, and Jody Kruskal is also working on a tutor for C/G and G/D Anglo.

This one is possibly slightly easier/quicker to access on AA's own web page? It's the 2nd link

on the page: http://www.alistairanderson.com/cds/2008-concertina-workshop.htm. The page

links back to the Free Reed page, so nothing is 'lost'.

Note the grammatically correct full stop after the link...😎

Bertram Levy is back! His Anglo concertina tutor, The Anglo Concertina Demystified, is now back through Rollston Press in paperback and Kindle in a print-replica edition of the 1985 original.

But instead of cassettes (remember them?) and CD's (also becoming a thing of the past), it now has QR code links to the audio files. And there are a lot of them, 74 in total.

It's written for the 30-button C/G Anglo, and he uses his own notation and tablature system, numbering the buttons 1-15 on both sides, and using "i" and "o" for push and pull. He also indicates the fingering he recommends. This is not a collection of tunes, but more of a structured approach to learning the instrument.

The first place to have the book is Red Cow Music in Yorkshire, so support your local music store first!

Hopefully in a couple of months. He has been working on accompanying videos, and he just sent me the final chapter this morning, so we're just about to the final formatting and assembly stage. As you can imagine, it's going to be a really great book with great instruction - it's very exciting to be working with Cohen to help make it happen.

One problem, these links:

www.concertina.com

require a period at the end or they won't work.

I think you have it backwards. Although you can’t see it, the links are of this form: https://www.concertina.com./

In order to have a working link, you must remove the period and lose the “s” in “https” (it’s not a secure site).

Thanks, David! I've updated the original post with the direct links.

Thanks, Gary. Sorry, but there are still two bad links.

First, this one that I missed this morning:

New Method of Instructions for the New Chromatic Duet English Concertina, by J.H. Maccann
http://www.concertina.com/maccann-duet/Maccann-New-Method-of-Instruction-1st.pdf

And this one is correct under Maccann, Crane/Triumph and Jeffries Duet, but under Hayden Duet it still has the faulty link. That’s also my omission (I only listed it three times instead of four).
