This tune, on page 50-51 in Easy Anglo 1-2-3, was written by Joan MacDonald Boes and was linked via QR code to a YouTube video that seems to have disappeared, but luckily you can find it here. Lovely playing by all, with Yuka Nakafuji (of Tricolor) on Anglo.

I had the good fortune to meet Hirofumi and Koji (bouzouki and guitar) last year when they toured Honolulu with O'Jizo. Absolutely amazing musicians and just as nice as they could possibly be, even if we couldn't really communicate very well between the two languages.

Agreed, though I like this version too.  The way i play it is close to Anahata's version:

The Corona version is lovely, thank you for posting it. I play it more like Daniel and I picked up the arrangement for English Concertina, by Ray Chandler, from the excellent Rude Mechanicals tunes resource:  http://www.rudemex.co.uk/library/RM_arrangements/01tunelib_RMarr.php

It was originally written as a very nice strathspey, and that is indeed how most people play it, but I much prefer the Tricolor/Corona treatment. Joan's family really enjoyed it too, something refreshingly different with their mother's tune.

 

Irish Concertina player Mandy Murray did something similar many years ago when she was in Aleanna and played "The Orphan" very slowly and expressively. Every time I hear someone blazing away on it I want to shout - stop, slow it down and make it really beautiful!

 I would go so far to say it isn't the same tune, although there are a few echoes of it in there.  I wonder if something got lost in translation somewhere?  It hardly matters though, it's a beautiful tune in its own right, and beautifully played.

Maybe even more lost in translation because I don't know well this music and I didn't want to just make a copy, but after listening to both versions I tried to adapt it on my Wicky duet in the same key of G. For me it's the same tune with 2 big changes in the Tricolor version: the rhythm and a F natural instead of a F sharp in some parts:

Very nice (both versions)!  The Japanese video seems to gone from the Internet now (at any rate, I was unable to find it) so your version of their version may be the only one we've got now.

Both are really good, but I prefer the morning version (the first one linked) which, I am guessing, is based upon the Japanese version.

 

Anyone know who the Mary that is the namesake of this tune?  The Virgin Mary?

Yes very lovely, both versions and yes Yuka Nakafuji's video has disappeared it seems, such a shame.  Since I have Gary's tutor I learnt this tune, albeit on english, after viewing the video which is unusual as I'm more into song accompaniment with concertina. Shall continue to play it Yaka's way, the first way I've heard it even though I've since listened to the original version. But Soloduet may I suggest you slow it down just a tad, Yuka might be chuffed.
