Don't confuse emojis with emoticons. The resemblance of the names is coincidental: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoji says "Not to be confused with Emoticon.".

*or at least, real-ish. The fact that some of the characters are bold and some are italic perhaps disqualifies it from being a real real emoticon.

I like emoticons better than emojis, to be honest. The latter are usually just silly pictures while the former can sometimes have a bit of good humour.

Not exactly, there is going to be an accordion emoji in the latest version of the standard released later this year, and it will have 'concertina' and 'squeeze box' as additional keywords (that means if you type 'concertina' into a text message, your phone may suggest replacing the word with an accordion emoji).
