d.elliott Posted February 11, 2020 Share Posted February 11, 2020 My wife, Diana, and I have just returned home from watching the new film ' Life and Times of David Copperfield'. There are departures from the original narrative, and Mr Micawber, played by Peter Capaldi , opted not to play the Dickensian flute, but a contemporaneous concertina! To stay in character, the instrument had to be played badly, and it was, but at least the instrument is clearly visible and is sounded out like the little star a concertina is. Di and I enjoyed the film, in my case even more so as the concertina used is my own loaner C-G Lachenal 20k steel reeded instrument, loaned to the film company about 18 months ago. I offered a 30k, or a 26k as well as the 20k. The somewhat 'lived in' cosmetic condition of the Lachenal mahogany ended 20 k was selected as being more in keeping with the character's impecunious condition. Needless to say I am more than pleased with my concertina' role in the film. The concertina has been returned in good condition, complete with Mr Micawber's very own finger prints , not that I have seen them, I just cannot bring myself to polish the woodwork unless I rub any prints away..
