Daniel Hersh
I haven't seen one quite like this before: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/30-key-D-A-concertina-Camppels-improved/303477304682. Here's one of the ends:
Squeezebox Of Delights
Yeah, that does look very English at first glance, until you look at the bellows and the construction inside. It almost looks just like somebody's just stuck some metal fretwork into a Scholer or Commander...
Squeezebox Of Delights
A quick search reveals that Campbell's were dealers, not manufacturers, so that's probably exactly what they did. Maybe 'improved' just refers to the fancy ends...?
Daniel Hersh
Stephen Chambers wrote about Campbell's some time ago: "Campbell's were probably the most important dealers in free reed instruments in the British Isles. They sold 'own label' concertinas made for them in Germany, and also by both Lachenal and Jones in London. However, they were much better known for their melodeons, which they sold in huge numbers, from the mid 1870's up until WW2. They were pioneers of selling by mail order, with free carriage to any address in Great Britain or Ireland, advertising in many newspapers & magazines, and claiming 150,000 Testimonials in a 1900 advertisement." .
