Instrument insurance in UK

Recommended Posts

I haven't insured my concertinas for years. When I got my first one (almost forty years ago) I insured it with a specialist company (can't remember who) and later insured it as an extra on the household insurance. When I got a second concertina the cost was so high for the two that I calculated I could buy a new instrument every 15 years for the same cost as the premium. (In other words, the insurance premium for a year was 1/15 of the cost of a new instrument.)

That's all a long time ago now, so things might have changed. I'd be interested to hear from anyone with experience as to whether the cost has become more reasonable, although even if it has I doubt I would bother to insure them now; not having had cause to make a claim in all that time.

+1 for Musicians Insurance Services. Cover includes gigs and theft from a locked vehicle, and although I’ve thankfully never had to claim myself, I’ve heard very good reports from unfortunates who have.

To @Little John ‘s point it would take me approx. 40 years of my premium to replace all the instruments I’ve got insured.

MIS and Newmoon seem to be the popular choices.  I've found them both very helpful although I've only had to make a claim once, for a broken mic.

If you're relying only on household insurance be aware that this probably won't cover you playing for gigs, and in some cases this might include unpaid performances.  Every policy wording is different so you need to check.

I would second Jack Hayward. Their rates seem competitive and a recent claim for shattered ends on a dropped concertina was handled with speed and no quibble. We have multi instrument, PA and 3rd party liability with them for a very good premium.

I have just renewed my home insurance policy. It covers unspecified personal items up to a certain limit, which is enough for some of my concertinas but not all of them, so until now I have had the more valuable ones as specified items. Even then my insurers have sometimes needed to get special approval for the insured sums. The new Wakker that I am expecting to receive some time soon will cost even more with the inclusion of the VAT on importing it, so I might not have been able to add it.

I have therefore now removed the specified items from my home insurance policy from the renewal date and insured them through New Moon. They are charging me less than the amount I am saving on the home policy and they have confirmed that they can add the Wakker when I get it.

So thank you SteveS for creating this thread.

Hi Richard

Do tell us about the new Wakker when you receive it.

I received my new Wakker Parnassus TT about 4 weeks ago - it's a terrific instrument.

I would love to hear more about both of your instruments (and hear recordings!) I am on the waitlist for a Wakker and daydream about it often, but they get much less discussion around here than other builders, it seems.
