Imhof & Mukle

Dear C.netters,

I have just received a rather battered 20b rosewood Anglo with brass reeds, numbered keys and a 'makers' label for Imhof & Mukle, 547 Oxford Street, London.

The concertina is #16745 and looks like an early Lachenal (Louis?).  I&M seem to have been famous makers of Orchestrions and Barrel Organs but I haven't been able to find anything about their concertina dealing activities. They don't seem to appear in any list of known dealers.......has anyone else seen a concertina with their label?

I have seen the following labels of dealers (not including Lachenal itself):

Labels of 11 separate dealers on 28 duet Lachenals

Labels of 69 separate dealers on 221 English Lachenals

Labels of 73 dealers on 333 Anglo Lachenals

Of course, some dealers are in both or all three dealer lists.

But I have never seen an Imhof & Mukle label before.

Not to draw any conclusions but doesn't the label look rather crudely snipped out of a larger piece, say with scissors?  Would a maker or dealer be so careless with their Mark?

It would of great interest to see a list these dealers in this thread?

They are listed in most London directories as organ builders, but they also sold pianos and other instruments. In 1856 they are at 15 St Johns St,  Clerkenwell, and they are at 547 Oxford St by 1865. By 1900 they are at 110 New Oxford St, but that may be the same location as London changed street name and numbering in the 1890s. Imhof's became Alfred Imhof and were a large record dealer in the 78rpm era.

I think the apparent irregularity in the shape of the label might just be an optical illusion caused by irregularities on the

lower edge of the hole in the wooden end?
