Right Hand Fingering Question-Anglo

I searched in the topics and couldn't find what I was looking for....so I hope I'm not duplicating a question. I am playing a 30 button C/G Anglo. I am using my "ring finger" to play the C# on button #19 AND I also use that finger to play the G and G# on button #18. I'm assuming this is "OK". Just for the heck of it, I tried to play # 19 with my "pinkie finger" and just just wasn't going to happen....an thoughts? TIA

My advice would be to go for what feels comfortable. I wouldn't assign a certain finger to a certain button because it will always depend on where you're coming from and where you're going to. I don't think it pays to be too dogmatic about this - even the best fingering 'rule' will be met by exceptions at some point. Perhaps other schools of though will be more methodic, but I've found that if you stay flexible and use your duplicate buttons, you can usually find a logical fingering pattern for most situations.

Definitely don't permanently and dogmatically allocate individual fingers to specific buttons. There are always cases where you need to "walk" your fingers and even cases where the best solution is to use the same finger consecutively on 2 different buttons. It's a matter of being methodical, and understanding the difference between "a clumsy compromise" and "the best solution".

 

Just for example, my left little finger (pinky) generally works six buttons: the 2 lowest on each of the three rows. There are bass runs where it plays 4 different buttons consecutively (although that usually means that other fingers are doing something on the off beats in between) and there are a few where a different finger fills in one of those lower buttons.

 

As a general comment, it is a good idea to get used to using your pinkies. Strangely, and probably because of the bass thing, my left pinky is stronger and considerably more nimble than my right.
