Chenal London, thirty-four button, pierced white metal ends, steel reeds, six fold bellows, ebonised and gilt hexagonal case, rosewood carry box. The metal end has 2 extra holes on each of the straight sides about half an inch in from the corners. There appears to be 2 holes in the end plate by the end of the buttons. CrP Posted December 4, 2015 Share Posted December 4, 2015 I concur with Jake's observations and conclusion, based on comparison with a 34-buttom metal ended Jones with which I am acquainted. The presence of 2 very small screws on each of the flat sides is virtually identical to the one I know, as is the patterning of the metal fretwork. The photo shows (indistinctly) but a small portion of the R hand handrest beneath the strap, which looks to me as if it's made of (maybe perforated?) metal -- rather than the same wood as that seen in the frame of the instrument. rob carr Posted December 4, 2015 Share Posted December 4, 2015 (edited) All the extra 'holes' are screw holes around the edge and by the buttons and the centres of two floral decorations in the fretwork by the air button. Identical end pattern to my jones for the fretwork and gold embossing. We can now add another to the list. You wait for years for one to turn up, then 3 in a fortnight. I should think there are hundreds more, but people are mis-naming the maker as there is no trademark anywhere on a lot of them. They seem to be under rated instruments, but the metal enders are far more better sounding than lachenals and some wheatstones. If that's so, then I think that's mighty unusual for a Jones, yes? Well spotted CrP!! I did notice it but made no comment until I recieved some more pictures from the auction house. I am awaiting their permission before publishing further. It is indeed a metal hand rest and the design of the fretted end continues under it in a single design. There are 19 buttons on the left end, one button is missing, there are two buttons under the left thumb and two more in front of the rest.
