rlgph Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 I'm a beginner on the Hayden duet. Recently, i've been hearing the squeaking of the wrist straps as i play (which may be an indication that i've move into the "advanced beginner" stage, since i now notice things other than whether or not i've pushed the right button). Does anyone have any suggestions as to how i might reduce this extraneous noise?

Can you try to determine -- perhaps by "playing" without trying for a tune -- just where the squeaking originates? I.e., is it coming from where the strap attaches, or perhaps the strap is rubbing against something?
Geoff Wooff Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) Do you mean it sounds like squeeking shoes ? If so perhaps a wee bit of saddle soap or leather softener might cure it... or perhaps it is the Bellows ? Edited September 21, 2015 by Geoff Wooff
Don Taylor Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) I think that the rlgph has a CC Peacock. My Peacock straps also squeak. I understand that Peacock birds have a loud high pitched call... Edited September 21, 2015 by Don Taylor

rlgph Posted September 22, 2015 Author Posted September 22, 2015 Don is right. It is a Peacock, and it definitely is the strap. Pretty much like leather shoes. (I'm not sure whether it's both straps or not -- i'll check when i get back to it, and also try to localize the sound.)
rlgph Posted September 22, 2015 Author Posted September 22, 2015 (edited) My bad. Upon closer examination, i have determined that the sound (or at least most of it) is coming from the bellows rather than the straps. I can get the straps to make some noise, but they're very quiet compared to the bellows. I suppose it's because of the relative newness, and that the noise should become less as the bellows get more thoroughly broken in? (I' ve had it only since late January, though i've played it pretty much daily since then. I did recently put in baffles on each side, so that may be part of the reason that it became noticeable.) Don Taylor Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 My squeaking (actually more like a creaking) comes from the straps, specifically from the point ringed below. The straps creak when they move back and forth over the hard edge of the corner shown:

At least that source is quieter than the current bellows squeak. Not that either is unbearably loud.
