Tune Of The Month, April, 2015: Harliquin Air

It was close, but we have a winner: Harliquin Air, a sprightly, simple English tune that might just become one of your favorites.

Here's some notation to get you started, but don't feel you have to play it exactly as written; find a key that suits you (ask for help if you need help transposing the dots; with ABC files, it's really easy), and find some way to make the tune your own.

According to the Traditional Tune Archive, the tune's archaically spelled title may refer "to a melody or one of the songs in Thomas Arne's (1710-1778) pantomime Harlequin Restor'd, or Taste Alamode, written in 1736."

As I mentioned, I learned Harliquin Air at a Northeast Squeeze In a few years back, when it seemed like almost everybody was learning it and playing it in the hallways. Which means it's a fun, accessible concertina tune!

it is played by Anahata and Mary Humphries with some really nice countermelody.

Or how about

playing it on melodeon?

And at a big

.

Enjoy!

Someone has to go first, right?

Suggestions on how to improve it welcome.

Here's an attempt.

I had some multitracking fun with it (as I often do). This time I also replaced my usual sober selfie with some more interesting visuals.

Two very nice contrasting starters.

Both of your versions are great

Bob love the visuals too.

I didn't vote for it but am glad it won and am looking forward to learning it.

Hurra, a TotM I already know!

Here's my one take attempt with slightly wobbly tempo

Now to listen to Anahata and all them play it better....

Splendid. I meant to start it off at The Horseshoe session, last sunday, so you could have joined in, but I didn't get round to it!

Works OK on iPad and very good it was too.

I'm finding it harder than I expected on my Anglo. There are a couple of places where I keep going wrong even though I've done the slow practice thing to try and educate my fingers, they still persist in disobeying me :)

It's a lovely tune indeed, one that I should be able to learn. Is D the standard key? I want to learn it in a key that other people usually play it in.

Nice job, everyone who contributed so far!

I've always heard it in D, and that's the key of most notation I've seen.

Here is my effort. I have just upgraded to a Marcus Music anglo, and this is the first new tune learned on it. I have recorded this in G major rather than D. I need to put in a lot more work on this tune - the B part took a bit of getting right.
