Long Haired David
I have a nice 20 key C/G Lachenal with a 74xxx serial number so well over 100 years old. It was refurbished before I bought it. I have had it for about 5 years now. Recently, it has started leaking air through two notes - one on the left hand and one on the right. I have taken the left hand side apart but cannot see any difference between the reed that is leaking from the others. I tried resettling the felt blanking piece and the pad attached to the button and put it back together but the problem is still there. Can anyone give me any suggestions as to what to try? Thanks David
Bruce Thomson
If it were me, I'd consider - whether the pads actually cover the holes well (positioning)- whether there's grit on the underside of the pad, or where it sits - whether the pad could be replaced with some latex or other flexible material- whether the springs weren't applying enough pressure (replace them or 'stroke' them to produce more tension.- whether the button connection was somehow actually keeping the lever pressed down enough to allow air through, i.e. not truly relaxed, bent lever or something like that. I'd certainly be sure it could be fixed, and would persist until I fixed it.
Theo
Depends what you mean by "Notes bleeding". Do you mean the notes play without pressing a button, or the notes play when you play a nearby note so you get two notes when pressing one button? I used to play a 5 string banjo and that had a drone. This is what I get on my concertina. One of the bass notes plays whenever I push. If it plays when you push but not when you pull, that sounds like a weak spring allowing the air pressure to raise the pad even when the button isn't depressed. (On the pull, the air pressure would push the pad down tighter.) Might need a new spring, but maybe the spring is lifting from the action board and just needs the end that sticks into the wood pressed back in or otherwise (re)secured.
