Hello,

my problem is very simple. I love music, I love to play anything I can get my hands on. I especially love Irish music, I play the penny whistle, the mandolin, guitar piano, sax, bass etc. Recently I have been reading up on concertinas. I LOVE their sound, I adore everything about them. In what I have been reading, it sounds like I want a 30 button Anglo. But prices show that to be out of the question for me. I am extremely poor and can not afford anything over about $50 bucks, is it a waste of time to buy an italian concertina to learn on? What should I do? I have a feeling that I will learn quick, and I don't want to have to go and buy another one in a month. What should I do? Even though it sounds childish, I want a concertina now!

Thanks for all your help

mmm.. Unless their penny whistle is a Copeland or something similar there would be no practical trade in value (To this day I have yet to see a music shop sell used Generation or Clarkes).

Trading instruments in could be one way of financing a purchase, but would be rather steep unless he had pretty much given up on those instruments, while the Man... or woman (they don't say) does love Irish Music (and very appropriately so) they might back slide into lesser forms of music and regret getting rid of those instruments.

Rentals might be one option... A new Italian would still be above your budget. Another would be looking for used Italians which might be less; though they tend to degrade a bit. I suspect regardless of what instrument you have you will want one better until you get a Jefferies or Wheatstone or at least a Dipper or a Suttner but hey, it gives you something to live for.

If you have talent on any of the instruments you play, maybe you should look to join a band and then save your gig money for your concertina?

BTW, where are you located? You never know, there might be someone local to you who might be willing to loan you a starter instrument.

Hmm. I have a couple of old whistles like that. Maybe I should put them up for auction on eBay. Who knows? :)

Hi guys,

Thanks for your advice. This board is awesome.

I live in Destin FL. What do you all think of a Hohner 20 button? Any good? I might be able to get one for a little over $50

There are a lot different opinions on that option but for around $50 you will at least get a feel for the instrument but know that there is a world of difference between the hohner and a quality concertina. Good luck. Howie
