westwind Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Hello All I'm a total newcomer to the world of concertinas having in the past been a flute player, unfortunately being forced to give up due to medical issues, trapped nerve in elbow, and no concertina playing should not effect it adversely, or at least my physiotherapist thinks not. I have always been interested in the concertina but have never been able to purchase one, however I recently acquired, in a trade, a Wallis/Lachenal 20 button concertina which I have arranged to have refurbished in a few weeks time when I am receiving some funds. I am also considering purchasing a more advanced model, 30 keys, but will give that some consideration, maybe I'll be sensible and wait to see how I progress with my refurbished 20 key when it is ready. Finally, does anyone know of a tutor in the Glasgow area. Thank you all. Paul
Alex West Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Paul I live on the Ayrshire coast south of Glasgow and from conversations with other experienced players and learners, there are no tutors specifically for the anglo in the Glasgow area. Depending on what type of music you want to play, there are some sessions or general music groups which you might find helpful (as others have), or you may be able to meet up with others (including myself) to give you some pointers rather than formal tuition. Send me a PM if you'd be interested; I'm away sailing until the end of June, but we could possibly organise something after then? I may be able to help you with progression to a 30 key as well! Terry McGee Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Hi Paul While you're hunting down a tutor, have a go at the free lessons from the On-line Academy of Irish Music. I found that very helpful in avoiding bad habits at the start. You can then decide if you want to go on to pay for some. They're very cheap.
westwind Posted June 13, 2014 Author Posted June 13, 2014 Thank you both, I'll be taking up both of your suggestions, just need to get my concertina refurbished. Terry it's wonderful to see you here, I've long enjoyed your posts on the Chiff board, your knowledge of flutes and their history has always amazed me; you are indeed a man of many talents and interests. Paul
CharlieG Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 I'm another fresh starter on concertina, (though a long-time player of a couple of fantastic McGee flutes!). After four short weeks of squeezing, I'm finding tunes pretty easily in all the standard session keys without a tutor. I agree that it makes sense to make use of the many online resources out there, but my best advice is always: Time With Your Instrument!
JimLucas Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Finally, does anyone know of a tutor in the Glasgow area. You should also consider attending the Arran Concertina Event in October. Here's a link to the ACE Facebook page. If you're impatient for details of this years gathering, you could PM concertina.net member Samantha, who does the arrangements.
