Anyone Remember Tangosite.com?

Recommended Posts

Tangosite.com was a noncommercial website that I had previously bookmarked because it had a large library of very interesting music appropriate for concertina. The site is now defunct. From what I can tell, it was created by the Belgian/Argentine musician, Dirk van Esbroeck. I believe he also played EC. It looks like Mr. Esbroeck died in 2007 and it took some time for the website to finally go away.

I was recently on a search for duets (the musical act, not the instrument) and was saddened to find this web source gone.

Does anyone know anything about website or the music library? I think much of what he had was arrangements of public domain material. I therefore hope that it has found a home somewhere.

Thanks Don. The address I posted was just the homepage, which appears to be archived at the Wayback Machine along with some of the tango links, but unfortunately the links to tunes and tune collections (lots of great looking stuff) appear to be gone forever…at least based on my weak investigative skills. Thanks again.

Thanks again Don and Wolf. I have tried plugging in the exact url that I had bookmarked(http://www.tangosite.com/concertina/pub/ec-site). As far as I can tell, this portion of the website was not archived. I'm sure many of those tunes are scattered around in various collections, but there were many that seem hard to find in the noncommercial realm (like tunes arranged for more than one instrument). Oh well.

Brandon:

It looks like the tune library was never linked to from a top-level domain name so the Wayback Machine has never seen a link to follow.

One last suggestion:

This version of Tangosite.com:

https://web.archive.org/web/20080509172308/http://www.tangosite.com/

says that someone named Michel Van der Meiren has taken over the administration of the site. Maybe you can find him? Maybe through this Youtube channel?

Better yet, here is his picture and email address at the ICA:

Hi all,

I'm Michel Van der Meiren, and tangosite and tangosite/concertina belong to me. Both sites are down due to a DNS change. I'll try and fix this this weekend...

I played Argentinian tango with Dirk Van Esbroeck and Alfredo Marcucci until they both passed away. Now I'm playing English concertina. At present, I am recovering from a medical period in my life. That's why the site problems aren't fixed yet.

I'll post here again when the (old) sites are back online. Newer material is on my new site, being: http://michelv.be/folkbrigade/ (currently in Dutch only)

Michel, it's lovely of you to make contact, and best wishes on your own health. I have more than one recording by Alfredo Marcucci--what a musician and artist he was.

Currently, I'm enjoying the fun of having discovered "la tubatango" and their successors, "los tubatango".... i actually think i visited the tangosite to read up on them....

Wow. I really never expected an answer to the question and here it is! I thought it was such a long shot.

Michel, I'm delighted that your website is still around and that you are recovering. I recall a wealth of interesting information and music on the site and look forward to seeing it up an running again in the future.

I noticed this morning that the site is back up and running. Thanks Michel!

I encourage anyone here to take a look around and bookmark the page. I particularly enjoy is the number of arrangements for 2+ instruments and the variety of genres - yes, there is tango, but there are several other genres also.

Yes, the two sites are up again. There is this very old one which haven't been updated for ages: http://www.tangosite.com/ from the days I played Argentinian tango; and there is the one with music suitable for English concertina: http://www.tangosite.com/concertina/. Both are hosted by the company I work for and use a very old application I developed, and they will not stay there forever. I'm not sure if I can muster the courage of moving them to my own server, which implements moving the data and building a new app in PHP for them... My current site with sheet music is in Dutch (for now): http://michelv.be/folkbrigade/
