But a faulty valve wouldn't make "both reeds sound together"...

 

If you're getting a second note sounding there may be a leakage between adjacent reed chambers, possibly through damage to the gasket, but more likely because the reedpan has dropped - which is something that often happens because one of the corner support blocks has become detached.

with both reeds sounding together, do you mean both 'D's, or a 'D' and another?? Stephen is right, you would not get both reeds sounding together, but a valve fault might give you might a beating / rumbling sound in one direction of bellows play only

 

A reed pan support block failing will usually give two different note pitches sounding.
