Thanks to all! :)

Like everybody I appreciate a lot your version Ratface. Do you play the cello too in your multi-tracked version?...

Lovely music on your souncloud... https://soundcloud.com/mrrowl

I play one of your tune (!), the second melody of rosline castle which I believe is a tune from "Maxou" from the chavannée.

How's this?

Nice progress, but particularly the A section is full of parallel fifths that draw attention to themselves and hijack the independence of the melody and the bass line. In the B section, you nicely find a way around this, but the A section needs work. On a Hayden it's hard to avoid parallel fifths in the left hand and they're not so problematic there, but try to avoid having the bass line parallel the melody a fifth lower.

Patrick, David has it absolutely right regarding the classical doctrine of part writing, and you may choose to observe it. However, I didn't find the parallels that distracting in this case. But if you were working on your arrangement in any case I would suggest replacing the tonic chord at the end of the first half of the A part by something else (such as the dominant, just like you have it at the end of part A).

Edited to add as to why I made my suggestion: You proceed with the tonic when resuming the A phrase, so I would not return to that chord just before - but of course that's matter of taste...

Best wishes - Wolf

Still have sore hands, but AT LEAST got the tune out, on my treble Albion -- I want to see if I can re-do this but add the foot bass. This is just the bare bones minimum again, so... don't really expect much comment, just happy to not break my record of having played the TOTM each month so far...

later I'll try to play it with my foot bass.

Have listened to more of you all playing... very nice!

Well done. For someone with sore hands you play a sprightly tune. I look forward to the foot bass addition.

My father's hands are not in a good shape. He showed an interest in playing concertina when I started learning - having heard people playing them in the pub when he was much younger. But he didn't have the flexibility to get around the keys. I'm hoping that that isn't hereditary.

Well, I wasn't going to post this as I failed completely to make a recording that was even approximately free of mistakes, but then I thought it would be interesting to compare them month by month. Recording it was interesting, because I didn't realise how 'unflowing' my playing was until I heard it played back to me. I've only been playing since November, so it certainly isn't worth listening to for its musical value! Lovely tune, though.

Yes it is a lovely tune Spinnningwoman, and fantastic that you've only been playing since November! Well done.

Indeed, thanks to everyone for a fabulous month of listening and learning from the very spare to the gloriously accompanied -- sore hands and all.

I fear my last minute contribution falls into the "there, it is recorded and uploaded even if not the way I'd like to have played it"' category, and I apologize in advance for the f# my finger inadvertently hit one time in the B part.

Next month, by golly, I'll work harder on the accompanyment and see if I can fill out my melody line and get my timing more consistent, whatever tune we choose.

  • 3 months later...

Maybe a bit late, but it does fit with the theme of the month

Comment (or tips) are welcome.

Nice even tempo and control of phrasing. If you can keep that while gradually working up to a a more "normal" speed, you'll be way ahead of those who try too hard to play "up to tempo" but then lose control of the flow.

Thanks for the encouragement Jim.
