SteveS Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 (edited) I have at present on my bench an interesting 'tina that looks as though it was marketed by J.J.Vickers, concertina dealer. Here are some particulars: - Tenor-treble EC 56 key - 6 sided - flat ebonised ends with open simple scroll fretwork (as found on say Lachenal Popular model) - 6 fold bellows - good set of steel reeds - serial number 55987 - J.J.Vickers branded case - 'tina branded Lachenal & Co., and stamped internally J.J.Vickers - same size as a treble model Because of these characteristics, and the fact that Lachenal don't advertise a TT variant of this model (I know they did bespoke instruments), has me wondering whether J.J.Vickers had makers produce instruments to specification and/or price. Overall this instrument has quality, but it's in the simple fretworked ends, with the reeds packed into an instrument that is the same size as a treble. There are precedents for made-to-spec instuments (eg Boyd, Salvation Army), but does anyone know whether J.J.Vickers also had instruments made to spec? Edited March 29, 2013 by SteveS
wes williams Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Steve - Vickers were able to do a lot of modifications 'in house', so maybe that's how this came about. See http://www.concertina.com/pricelists/dealers/Vickers-Pricelist-c1935.pdf. This list is probably earlier than suggested.
