david robertson Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 A rather distinctive New Model tenor/treble which I sold almost exactly a year ago has popped up on eBay, with the usual bargain "buy-it-now' price, and the usual request not to bid, but to contact the seller by email. In spite of the transparency of the scam, someone appears to have placed a bid (unless, of course, that is part of the scam!) I have reported it to eBay.
John Wild Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 (edited) A rather distinctive New Model tenor/treble which I sold almost exactly a year ago has popped up on eBay, with the usual bargain "buy-it-now' price, and the usual request not to bid, but to contact the seller by email. In spite of the transparency of the scam, someone appears to have placed a bid (unless, of course, that is part of the scam!) I have reported it to eBay. I viewed the item by clicking on your link. I then clicked on the link for the seller ( = hannulink (17151). i intended to use the windows function 'snipping tool' to paste what i saw into this email. However, it seems to be blocked in this case. So I am sticking to copy and paste, and you can see some of the detail below: eBay My World: hannulink( 17151) Member since: 01-Sep-01 Location: United States Items for saleVisit my shop Add to favourite sellers Contact member Listings This seller currently has no items for sale. the last statement is interesting, given that the item still appears on ebay. Chris Drinkwater Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 (edited) It's obvious that the seller is "bogus" and has managed to hijack an Ebay lister's genuine account with intent to use it for fraudulent purposes. I have seen it done before. This why the "bogus" seller wants prospective bidders to contact him directly via his personal email. The best thing to do is to contact the real Ebayer via Seller messages and alert him to the scam and the fact that his account has been hijacked. I have sent the "real" Ebayer a warning message. fearfeasog Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Also, when I clicked the link to the seller's page, an additional tab opened in my browser (chrome), which I closed very quickly. I'm scanning my computer now for malware. be careful!
griffinga Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Used to see this type of thing once in a while when searching for violins (on EBay). Beware.
Theo Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Don't just tell the seller. Report it to ebay as a fraudulent sale.
Ann-p Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 The last one tried by this scammer was a multiple one, see "general discussion" topic Whetstone Tenor Treble (I made a typo in the title!) on Nov 19th. Further to that discussion, I found I had copied the item off ebay, but I don't know how to reproduce it here. He has clearly decided to try another new item!
Ann-p Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 (edited) The concertina is still on ebay, but he has done the same trick with putting several expensive musical instruments on the sales banner at the bottom of the listing. Clicking them shows that ebay have already removed them. Edited December 9, 2012 by Ann-p
Ann-p Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 I reported this to ebay after my post yesterday, but it was still on this morning so I reported it again. It's gone now, 'til the next time!
Daniel Hersh Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Here are a couple more of the same type of scam: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wheatstone-Lachenal-English-Concertina-/261141383771 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Wheatstone-concertina-Aola-squeeze-box-/261141383791 I have reported both to eBay.
