adrian brown
Only just noticed mixture of brass and steel reed shoes. How are the reeds attached on the steel shoes? I keep looking at these photos of the steel reed shoes and wondering how they did it. It looks like welding, but I don’t think they could do that in the 1860s? (at least not gas welding) However, if it was some sort of brazing, or solder, you’d surely see the difference in metal colour, and forge welding would surely have destroyed the slot? Better close-up photos might help as these are a bit blurred when you try to enlarge them. Adrian

Henrik Müller
...... people may have, already, got entrenched in the original design (if it ain't broke- don't fix it) - not an uncommon attitude to change even today! ... Oh, yes ! /Henrik
