cboody
Geoff, Thank you I did not realize that " "Londonderry Air" was an alternative name. It it the real Irish name? See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Londonderry_Air and associated articles for reasonably accurate information (there is actually quite a bit of controversy about the origins of this tune as I recall. And, here's the tune with words (though not in the best key for singing I wouldn't think). ==== X: 1 T: The Londonderry Air C: Traditional M: 4/4 L: 1/8 F:http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/mirror/troseandassociates.com/abc/DannyBoy.abc 2012-02-07 053630 UT K: F EFG | A3 G AdcA | (GF) D3 w: Oh, Dan-ny boy, the pipes, the pipes are call_ ing FAB | c3 d cAFA | G4 z w: From glen to glen, and down the moun-tain side. And if you come, when all the flowers are dying, W: And I am dead, as dead I well may be, W: You'll come and find the place where I am lying, W: And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. W: And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me, W: And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be, W: If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me, W: I simply sleep in peace until you come to me. ==== Check Jon Chamber's site or one of the other abc sites for some versions with chords. JimLucas
Thank you I did not realize that " "Londonderry Air" was an alternative name. It it the real Irish name? One proud old Irishman I knew -- a fine fiddler who played the tune as a slow air -- insisted that it's not. He called it simply "The Derry Air", as he insisted that, "There is no London in Derry!" A matter of perspective and opinion, clearly, but in fact there are many tunes that are known by multiple names, and often it's not possible to say for certainty which was "the original". This is especially the case with tunes that have had more than one set of words put to them (some have had hundreds), as the name of each song becomes associated with the same tune. cboody
The name issue goes away back. Percy Grainger, who did an amazing arrangement of the piece (you can hear the brass band version in "Brassed Off") always called it "Irish Tune from County Derry." I rather like that name...
