Gloomy Sunday

Does anyone have the sheet nusic or abc for the 1933 song Gloomy Sunday please?

Sometimes sessions I go to are dominated by singers of the 'Dirge-athon' variety, anything not stuffed to the gills with abject misery, death, disease etc. causes raised eyebrows rolleyes.gif

I've given up trying to lighten the mood with the odd cheerfull tune (I'm terminally optimistic) and fancy trying Sarkynyt Onni (Shattered Happiness) followed shortly after by Gloomy Sunday ....... then sitting back and seeing how many people are driven to throw themselves through the windows (though that could just be my playingbiggrin.gif)

Reminds me of the 'death and despondency' sing-arounds at Sidmouth.

Happy times <_<

I'm just reading this thread after watching 'A Pink Floyd Miscellany' recorded off the TV last night, including the cheery sentiments (from 1968)

If you survive till 2005

I hope you're exceedingly thin

For if you are stout You will have to breathe out

While the people around you breathe in ...

I don't have Gloomy Sunday, but you might try pairing it with Gloomy night: the words seem to fit the same category.

N:Footnote: Tune: Roslin Castle (122)

O:Scots

Z:dt:glomnite

M:4/4

L:1/8

Q:2/4=100

W:The gloomy night is gath'ring fast,

W:Loud roars the wild inconstant blast;

W:Yon murky cloud is filled with rain,

W:I see it driving o'er the plain;

W:The hunter now has left the moor,

W:The scatt'red coveys meet secure;

W:While I here wander, prest with care,

W:Along the lonely banks of Ayr.

W:

W:The Autumn mourns her rip'ning corn

W:By early Winter's ravage torn;

W:Across her placid, azure sky,

W:She sees the scowling tempest fly;

W:Chill runs my blood to hear it rave;

W:I think upon the stormy wave,

W:Where many a danger I must dare,

W:Far from the bonnie banks of Ayr.

W:

W:'Tis not the surging billows'roar,

W:'Tis not that fatal, deadly shore;

W:'tho' death in ev'ry shape appear,

W:The wretched have no more to fear:

W:But round my heart the ties are bound;

W:The heart transpierc'd with many a wound;

W:These bleed afresh, those ties I tear,

W:To leave the bonnie banks of Ayr.

W:

W:Farewell, old Coilia's hills and dales,

W:Her heathy moors and winding vales;

W:The scenes where wretched Fancy roves,

W:Pursuing past unhappy loves!

W:Farewell my friends! farewell my foes!

W:My peace with these, my love with those-

W:The bursting tears my heart declare,

W:Farewell, the bonnie banks of Ayr!

That's it ..... with the added bonus of translated lyrics biggrin.gif If the singers aren't miserable enough after they've heard the tune I'll hand out copies of the words laugh.gif

Hi Anlej

When I was young, I used to think so. As I got older reality set in. :(

You could try this for an encore:

I'll play it as they leap biggrin.gif

Thanks for the link to the Finnish tunes, I already know Sarkynyt Onni but there are lots on there to learn biggrin.gif Ikaalisten Rantatie's just been downloaded

...... and it's only the outside that gets older .... the inside stays 20 laugh.gif

Cheers Ann

Really? I'm only 18 myself but 18 was a good year for me. I would have ABC'd the tune but my goodness that's quite complex!

It's not that bad ..... especially after Lamma Bada Yatathanna laugh.gif

I've just copied the 'middle' treble melody line out longhand (no printer ) so that's cut down the mass of dots to a more manageable looking score biggrin.gif Now to have a go at playing it biggrin.gif

I recommend "Worldes Blis". It's so depressing it never fails to cheer me up:

(awful weedy performance but it does have the original words and a translation).

There are another 12 verses of it, all in the same vein, which I think have never been recorded in the last 800 years. See Dobson and Harrison, "Mediaeval English Songs", for the whole thing. A few more verses (untranslated) here:

From the samples on the web, it sounds like John Fleagle has the best version. Dunno how much of it he sings.

I have it on his CD. Sadly, John died in 1999.

Try this, should have tears dripping off noses into beer mugs, Sorry about the sound quality, it's undergone a lot of compression.

Interesting. What instrument are you playing? Sounds like a melodion. Could be a hybrid anglo or duet.

Dots and text all on one A4 page or smaller - that's terrific - really useful to have on one page - 12 out of 10 for cleverness!

What I need to work out now is how to open the midi in a format where I can adjust speed etc while playing it and also save it to file.

The new thin, whiteish midi playing bar which opens does not allow me to do either. Previously when you hit the midi button in tuneotron it used to download and then you opened the containing folder and then it would open to play and then you would save it with the same name as the master score file. so they come up together a month later when you want to play sing and listen.

How to open the new play bar (it;s quicktime I think) to adjust speed etc?

I will try to put up a pic of the bar

tks! :)
