This has been discussed before, but there is a dearth of high quality gold on black bellows papers to forcing repairers & restorers to compromise in the designs available or on quality.

 

attached is a photo of the first metallic gold papers samples for:

 

  • dot and cross;
  • the Lachenal 'L'
  • The Wheatstone Daisy pattern.

 

These are printed on coupons of three similar papers per coupon, so four coupons does a fold valley, the sizing is based on the original OEM size as measured off instruments I have restored over the years, but will accommodate Dave Leese bellows; and there is space around a cut line in the pattern so over size trims can be used on bellows with bigger end papers. The paper is black through stock, so there is no white cut line

 

I don't have the final costing yet, however I am looking only to break even.

 

Some people have already shown interest, if they can make contact again, then I will work out costings for quantities,

They cover the potentially messy skived edges of the lower valley piece, the two gussets and the top run. Even when it appears the concertina does not have papers they are usually there, just black so they blend in.

yes Chris,

 

some concertinas were fitted with skived leather panels, some were a textured paper product. some bellows had the leather or textured stuff fitted in doubles across the valley hinges , as butterfly's, but these butterflys often cause long term leakages.

 

 

If any one is interested, I can provide the textured all black 'paper' - papers, and as well as the gold on black as shown.; I also have a supply of complete A4 sheets of gold on natural white, which can be nested and cut to any paper size for trebles, barries, bass or duets

A very brief update.

 

I have the first production output coming through, and, coincidentally, I have had a new set of bellows to an old instrument with the remains of the a Lachenal 'L' papers set.

 

I have fitted new bellows and just finished 'papering'.

 

I am pleased with the result, even though the bellows are not yet lacquered.

When it comes to polishing bellows with black shoe cream you'll probably be pleased if you have the textured plain

black 'papers' rather than the gold-embossed decorative ones !

Unless your objective is to restore an old and valuable instrument back to it's former glory, then you need as good-er reproduction paper as you can get hold of, and to exercise the same care as you would do with any of the usual bellows papers when slapping shoe cream about.

 

I often used textured paper, but I have been disheartened by the lack of decent and high quality bellows papers, particularly of the patterns on black paper.

The final end game

 

a set of new bellows, fitted to existing frames on an old and venerable Lachenal concertina whose original bellows also bore the Lachenal 'L' pattern.

 

The photo is of the new bellows after finishing, taken in natural light.

in this post you speak of lacquering the bellows. Do you just apply that to the papers or do you have a finnish for the whole Bellows ?

in this post you speak of lacquering the bellows. Do you just apply that to the papers or do you have a finnish for the whole Bellows ?

I have a propriety 'finish' that I buy, recommended by David Leese, A finish that is sprayed over the finally papered bellows. This seals the papers on to the bellows. On the black it makes it all richer an the black even blacker. Just remember to mask the chamois seals

 

This is not a proper lacquer in the traditional sense of the word, but is a designed leather finishing treatment.

 

The finish is sold by the Identity Store, and it is call something like 'master shine'

Dave,

sent you a pm on both gold on white and gold on black. It appears that these papers don't have any adhesive on them, and what is the best for attachment? I had some made and they came on a roll with a light adhesive under a peel away backing strip. The adhesive isn't strong

enough to last though. i'd like your papers for a new instrument that is being made now. thanks. wes
