spindizzy Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Here There's a whole bunch of 'tinas from Johnny Roadhouse Music. All seem well overpriced to me. This is the Manchester Hobgoblin branch ... They must have got a few new ones in, there wasn't much there last time I called by. I expect the shop prices to be higher than e-bay ones, overheads and I can try them out, but it looks like they've priced these at the shop price on ebay. And they have to compete with Barleycorn (Chris Algar), which is only around 30 miles away. Chris

Chris Certainly overpriced IMO And,if this is Hobgoblin as you say, the baritone could be the one they were advertising recently as a 'tenor'. I asked about it and found that the range was not that of a tenor at all, but that it was a baritone. What would worry me is that if, as they told me, the restorer had assured them it was a tenor, what other gaps are there in his knowledge? Edited April 1, 2011 by John Adey
John Wild Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 And,if this is Hobgoblin as you say, It is definitely Hobgoblin. this is a quote from an email exchange a few years ago: These items are being sold by the Manchester shop, you can contact > them on 0161 273 1000 or > hobgoblin.manchester@johnnyroadhouse.co.uk regards John Wild
Ptarmigan Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 (edited) WOW! They're expecting £3,500 for this Lachenal £3,500 for this Connor! So what do these folks get for a Jeffries these days? Cheers Dick Edited April 2, 2011 by Ptarmigan
Chris Drinkwater Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 WOW! They're expecting £3,500 for this Lachenal £3,500 for this Connor! So what do these folks get for a Jeffries these days? Cheers Dick Yes, I know, Dick. But think of their overheads. They have a shop, there's rent, rates, staff wages, lighting, heating costs, someone to sweep the floor. Chris Algar operates out of a brick lock-up in his back garden. What could be cheaper? Four years ago, Hobgoblin had a slightly battered 48 key wooden-ended Edeophone treble for sale, for which they were asking £2,300 at a time when Barleycorn could sell you a similar instrument in almost mint condition, cosmetically, for just £1800. That's nearly 25% less! I don't know if they ever did sell it but I kept seeing it still for sale at folk festival after folk festival, on their stand, up until last year. I wouldn't touch it, besides, it wasn't a very good player, which is the most important thing. Chris

Stephen Chambers Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 There's a whole bunch of 'tinas from Johnny Roadhouse Music. This is the Manchester Hobgoblin branch ... Now there's a name that takes me right back! But when I used to go in there (forty years ago, when I was a student in Manchester) it seemed to sell all sorts of secondhand stuff, not just musical instruments, and they'd often have concertinas - I saw my first Wheatstone duet in there, though I didn't know what it was at the time...
Stephen Chambers Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Perhaps Hobg. should invest in a brick lock-up! I can remember when they started out with a market stall, and then got a barn...
