Randy Stein Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 This may be a redundant discussion so let me apologize right off for those who have seen it many times before. I am looking at an inexpensive Wheatstone Mayfair that has what seem to be very good sounding accordion reeds. I use these with students to try out as well as a backup for whatever. rssout

What kind of information about them are you looking for?

I am more interested in the accordion reed sound of the concertina than the Mayfair itself. rss
Stephen Chambers Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I am really looking for opinions based on experience. I am more interested in the accordion reed sound of the concertina than the Mayfair itself. Randy, If that's the case, in my experience they tend to sound more concertina-like than many of the more recent hybrids that I've seen.
Whittler Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I'm a new player who bought a Mayfair over a cheap modern instrument just before Christmas. I still can't play more than two or three tunes (The Dark Island, Danny Boy, Summertime). I love the sound from this instrument, that's when I hit the right notes, and IMHO the fact that it was made by Wheatstone, even if it was a cheaper mass market Wheatstone, shines through in the feel and tone. I bought it based on the advice I received here and even though it was battered and bruised and I had to make new straps for it, I have never regretted it.
d.elliott Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I have done a couple of repairs on Mayfairs, and have found them simple and well made. Dave
Tanny Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Hi I recently got an Anglo May Fair from Chris Algar. It was an upgrade from a Rochelle. Chris gave me much good advice. To me it is really great- I am still a beginner so can't fully comment. It has proper belows and is much smaller that the Rochelle and I feel that I can start to do cuts and things now. People tell me that it sounds quite sweet and when I compared the sound to an old English Wheatstone Aeola, I do have to say that matched up pretty well considering the differnce in build and price.
