OLDNICKILBY Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Dave Leese has just taken delivery of a batch of 1 1/4" x 2 steel countersink woodscrews for those who are in need of such rarities. You can always spin the heads on the side of a grinder to make them look like No 1's
d.elliott Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Nick, Dave Leese phoned me and told me about these, I have just received my 1st gross, still in x-MOD packaging dated 1956. I wonder what the sell by date on hermetically sealed and jungle preserved wood screws is? Dave
OLDNICKILBY Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 In Sheffield probably not very long but in the rest of the civilized World "Time Immoral"
Chris Drinkwater Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 In Sheffield probably not very long but in the rest of the civilized World "Time Immoral" Are you sure you posted this on the right thread or have you screwed up? Anyway, jolly useful for those what need them. I wonder what other treasures the MoD might be sitting on, having over-ordered years ago, just in case. And at what cost? I read that they have been paying £22 for light bulbs that can be bought for 65p elsewhere. Someone's screwing 'em, that's for sure! Chris
spindizzy Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Dave Leese phoned me and told me about these, I have just received my 1st gross, still in x-MOD packaging dated 1956. Dave A gross! I love imperial units (after a lifetime in cgs/MKS/SI)
d.elliott Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Dave Leese phoned me and told me about these, I have just received my 1st gross, still in x-MOD packaging dated 1956. Dave A gross! I love imperial units (after a lifetime in cgs/MKS/SI) cgs/MKS/SI, Euch , or GROSS as my daughter would say, but I can remember calculating force in poundals....... and beer at 1s 6d a pint; petrol at 2s 6d a gallon, and policemen who looked old, and Doctors who looked even older. I cannot remember breakfast today however........................................................................ Anyway Nick, Sheffield is not that corrosive these days, we had a clean air act. and now no mines and no steelworks, so the sell by date on these screws could be extended a little, even in Sheffield. The screws are amazing, they appear to be pickled and passivated, no corrosion and unlikely to corrode in use. Tower Muskets were obviously designed to last. Dave
OLDNICKILBY Posted March 9, 2011 Author Posted March 9, 2011 And to think I only went into my local Hardware Shop for some "Asbestos" string , saw he was mucky and he told me he had bought a parcel of old obsolete screws as a clearance line."Got any 1/4 or 3/8 1s or 2ss? Arh says he so I bought them ALL. Don't suppose you've any 1" or1/14 1s or 2s? Ahr says he , Sold says I" Then I phoned me old mate Dave. Now everybody is HAPPY The shop man because he thought he would never sell such a stupid size and all of us because we can keep Tina s going.
Stephen Chambers Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 ... we had a clean air act. and now no mines and no steelworks ... No black Town Halls either these days... "Got any 1/4 or 3/8 1s or 2ss? Arh says he so I bought them ALL. Don't suppose you've any 1" or1/14 1s or 2s? Ahr says he , Sold says I" You mean you didn't ask him if he'd got any 1/4" or 3/8" 0s or 00ss? I was using a dozen of my last box of 1/4" 00s only this morning, to re-attach the metal ends of a Lachenal 32-key - seeing that the !/4" 2s the previous repairer had used looked so out of place and enormous for the job...
