I would be grateful for an MP3 to be posted ,of an Traditional Irish tune played in D on a C box but at about a third of the speed.

Not sure how the amazing slow downer works, but an MP3 as a starter would be nice.

Many thanks

Hello Alan,

You could try "Best Practice" it is a free downloadable program that is available on the web... it works for me; Change speed, change key, tune in old recordings to be in tune with your instrument, repeat A-B etc.

best regards,

Geoff.

ABRSM Speedshifter

From the body that runs the UK music exams. Shifts both speed and/or pitch. It's free.

I just tried one track and the quality of sound, even at maximum slow down rate, is very nice.

This looks good Peter and even I think I understand it.

I will report back later.

Thanks

Just one thing I noticed about the Speedshifter whe n I tried it yesterday : at some sample rates it seemed to flatten the pitch by a semi tone. Which was easily compensated for BUT you may want to check the correct pitch before you start so you're certain you aren't learning a tune in an unnecessarily difficult key.

I am impressed with the sound quality the software maintains at slow speed, compared to other slow downers I have tried.

Feeling of deja vu here or just me.

I see the education board Speedshifter one wants my life history to use it so thanks but no thanks.

The best practice wont open afer installing ... twice... and I seem to remember this happening before 0 during installation wizard the main programme is not highlighted and only install shortcuts tick option appears live. I seem to recall emailing the problem to the developer but heard no more.

I assume u got it work Chris? I was recommending these to someone else but don;t want any brickbats....

Hi Alan

You can add Audacity to the list. It does all that and more. I've used it in the past and it's a nice program.

Thanks

Leo :)

Thanks Leo

You can also right click on the tune file and select "open with..." Audacity should be among the available options. At least it is on my current (Linux) computer and was on my previous (Windows XP) computer.

There is a speed change slider on the toolbar, but that also alters pitch. The change tempo without changing pitch is in the Effects menu.

Hi Alan

here's one I put up once before Nice tune and quite steady. I now play it in C too.

D is a real challenge on C/G to begin with and I only have a c# pull on RHS accidentals with e flat push. I have a 26b Jeffries C/ I got off Bill Crossland who had it from Chris Algar.

I've had a lot of good advice form several other C netters , D Boveri, Az and D Levine on how to avoid 'chopping' which has been a real help. Hard work when you have notes on all three rows in various directions , but for reels particularly you have to keep it flowing and use ornaments etc . I diiddle it first to get the tune off

I think you have to construct fingering every time for each particular tune although some chord shapes can be instructive although most of us don't do too much chording in ITM

ITM on a D/G would be easier for sessions but not for the tunes as they have develped to play with fiddles, flutes etc IMHO.

Over the last few months UI have only really played The Maid Behind the Bar , Cooley's Reel and The Bucks of Oranmore. I still busk away at sessions and do a few party pieces but this is the first time in years I have been so disciplined and it's paying off I think
