Ron123
Hello Looking at the Wheatstone Ledgers there is a column headed paid, the next column along with no heading but containing recorded payments I assume are deposits or part payments. Is my assumption correct? Kind Regards Ron
wes williams
Hi Ron, The ledgers aren't constant in their layout, so which ledger are you talking about? .. wes
Ron123
Hello Wes I'm looking at Ledger C1047 Page 023. My interest is that I have just bought concertina serial No. 3293. First purchased by Miss Caroline Way 6th August 1851 in the paid column there is a figure of 2.2.0 in the next column it contains a No. 4. wes williams
Hello Wes I'm looking at Ledger C1047 Page 023. My interest is that I have just bought concertina serial No. 3293. First purchased by Miss Caroline Way 6th August 1851 in the paid column there is a figure of 2.2.0 in the next column it contains a No. 4. Regards Ron Hi Ron, I've always read that '4' like figure as 'Ex', meaning that the price paid was to part exchange a different instrument for the one sold. Edit: The ledgers record that she did another exchange on the 25th Aug (page 25) for instrument 3082, which might be your instrument. Serial 3293 appears three more times in C1047: page 031: 22 Oct 1851 page 064: 01 Jun 1852 page 072: 14 Aug 1852 Edited December 8, 2010 by wes williams
Ron123
Hello Wes Thank you for the extra details you researched, much appreciated. It's fascinating to know the Early years of an instrument I now own. I wonder if the last person who hired it went on to buy it....? wes williams
Ron, As she (Caroline Way) is female, you can find a few more details about who she might have been in Allan Atlas's Ladies in the Wheatstone Ledgers which also gave me info about the later exchange. Not much research needed when you know where to look Edited December 10, 2010 by wes williams
