wheatstone bellows paper

Recommended Posts

My Wheatstone Linota leaks a little air and I think I'll have to replace the bellows.

Originally it has black bellows paper and gold stars on them (similar to the lachenal gold dots on white papers).

Does anybody know an address for these black wheatstone style of bellows paper?

Thanks

Marien

Thanks for searching Theo,

Alas the drawing is different.

I think I'll have them printed somewhere.

Marien.

Marien,

I have been wrestling with this issue for the last few years,

David Leese papers are good, but I would prefer a more delicate printing, and not a pantone gold; also he does not stock some of the more 'interesting' patterns.

I have now artwork for dot and cross, Wheastone Daisy and Lachenal 'L' papers.

I have a stock of A4 sheets of true gold on natural white dot and cross, I print out a nest of the sizes of paper on the reverse, cut them out and I have papered baritones, bass, odd sizes as well as dozens of trebles of one form or another. Due to the fineness of the true gold print the look absolutely pristine and original. If you ever need odd sizes let me know and i can lay out paper nests and pre- print them.

Refering back to 'black',. I have had problems with stock selection for the all black with gold papers, but I am fairly confident that will have in true gold (foil) on black the dot and cross, the wheatstone daisy, and the lachenal 'L' . This by mid January. the spec. has to be: black cat down a coal mine in the middle of the night deep black. and I wanted eggshell finish, but I think that they will need finishing on the instrument, or in sheet form

If this is of any use to you then please make contact. I will see if I can help you.

I find it distressing to put wrong papers on good instruments, it spoils a good job, I eventually want to get the daisy pattern onto white, get gold stars onto white and build up a specialist selection of the more rare papers. I think the instuments deserve it.

All the papers sold by David Leese are printed litho with proper printing inks and not digitally printed.

There are about six different golds in the pantone ink range. What is the true gold that you print your papers in?

Originally bellows papers would have been printed letterpress from engraved plates. When I was an apprentice compositor in the 60's, this would have been possible but most letterpress printers have now been replaced by lithographic printers who, however, still use the same basic inks as in letterpress days.

I guess it may help to see the precise pattern on the wheatstone.

I will try to make a good photograph of the papers on the bellows at daylight and post it here.

I have had blocks made to use foil, as David Leese does on his leather embossing process. I know the standard of David's papers, and the inks he has used. However I think that inks are a compromise - good as they are, as opposed to the foiling process which is a metalic deposition process. I am not knocking David' papers, I am trying to add value to my restorations by getting closer to the original, and by widening the range of papers I have available.

Futher on the Wheatstone bellows paper...

To show what kind of bellows paper I am searching - There is a wheatstone duet for sale on ebay that has almost the same bellows papers as mine.

In fact it looks similar to the usual lachenal gold print label - but in stead of white paper it is printed on black paper. In addition - the linota has a border line in gold on every label, the wheatstone duet 1914 does not seem to have that, but for the rest the bellowspaper is the same.

It has taken nearly three years, as many block re-cuts, and an age to identify a suitable paper stock,

but...... we hit the printers in 2 weeks time.

gold foil sealed onto a rich black paper which has passed gluing and smearing trials, fine
