Anyone have any feedback and advice on bidding for this concertina on ebay. I realize it's problematic to buy instruments online but I live in Costa Rica and I don't have much choice. Basically, I'm looking for either a vintage beginner's instrument (English Concertina as I prefer a chromatic instrument) or an instrument that will be good enough to be played live as soon as I am good enough to play it. I'm a guitarist/singer/songwriter but am looking to vary my delivery of songs and concertinas seem to be a likely option.

What kind of questions can I ask or what kind of evidence can I be sent to ensure it is not a scam or an issue of quality?

if you have any advice or have an instrument that doesn't exceed the price of this one then please let me know. I have family in the States, the U.K and Australia so postage could be done there and I have a paypal account.

The seller is very well known to the list. I have bought several items from him over the past 10 years. Selling concertina's is his full time business. If anyone has had negative experience with him, I haven't seen it mentioned on the list. It looks like a good deal and if he says it is playable, it is. That said, I believe most players prefer more than 4 fold bellows, but English isn't my strong suit. I guess you technically don't run out of air as easily as an anglo. It would fit your description of "good enough to be played live as soon as I am good enough to play it." I have paid more for worse.

The seller is Chris Algar of Barleycorn Concertinas, one of the biggest and most respected sellers of restored vintage concertinas in the world. Most of his sales are not on eBay, so if you don't buy this one you could contact him to see what else he's got like this. However, I believe his eBay prices tend to be a little lower than his non-eBay ones.

Thanks for the feedback. I bid on it but my internet connection failed me when i was putting in my last (and what was supposed to be winning) bid. So, I'm still in the market for something of similar budget. Must be vintage, must be highly playable and in no need of immediate restoration and must be a fair deal.
