Cheap D/G Anglo?

I may be working away from home for a while, and can't be sure how secure my environment might be. So I don't want to take my present box with me but I still want to practice.

 

Looking for a cheap D/G that I won't be too upset if it gets nicked. 20 button might be OK. However, most cheaper boxes seem to be C/G.

 

Anyone got any ideas/suggestions?

 

(South/west UK) - don't really have a budget in mind yet, sorry to be vague

 

And I don't have an iPad...

Its probably a bit mental but..... get a A4 peice of cardboard draw or print image of buttons, then fold it in half RH on one end and LH on other. At least you can practice the fingering. Silent and cheap. I did a similar thing when wanting to practice melodeon but as I was camping had no where to story it securely, plus not wanting to disturb neighbouring campers.

I don't think I've come across anything short of things like the Sherwood at about £1000.

 

Conversion could be a possibility. Probably easier at the cheaper end where the reeds are on accordion-like reed blocks. Instruments with flat mounted reeds are less easy to come by anyway, and a C/G might not have space for longer G/D reed plates.

 

G/D reed sets can be obtained.....

I bought a 20 button G/D Scholer c. 1990 a couple of years ago. It was very cheap (under $100 canadian) and not as bad as you might think. 2 reeds per key. Was a good camping concertina until I gave it to a local military museum for their "Music in the Trenches" school programme.

What is really annoying is that a 20 key GD went on Ebay recently for a few tens of pounds :-(

You might try one from BGK/Silvetta.. I had one of their 20-button double-reeded G/D's for a while (from Castiglione in the US) and it was a good instrument for the price. Here is a video of someone playing one of their C/G's. I don't know if they have any UK dealers. If you can't get one from them directly, you might try Hartenhauer in Germany. If you get a single-reed, make sure it's a low G/D (pitched below a C/G) rather than a high one. The double reed one that I owned had one set of low reeds and one high.

Buy it anyway and then sell it again once you get back from your time away. You won't lose much and might even gain financially, and you're much less likely to be disappointed with this than a cheaper one.

 

It's a pity Wim Wakker has so far resisted all suggestions for selling a G/D Rochelle.
