cnrobinson
I was just looking at the concertina.net goodies with a view to the festive season, when it struck me that they are all Anglos! Now, call me an old fuddy-duddy, but I play an English. Why are there no T-shirts with English or Duets on them? Chris

JimLucas
I was just looking at the concertina.net goodies with a view to the festive season, when it struck me that they are all Anglos! Now, call me an old fuddy-duddy, but I play an English. Why are there no T-shirts with English or Duets on them? From one old fuddy-duddy to another: The T-shirts and such are not "all things concertina" merchandise, but specifically Concertina.net merchandise, and so they feature the Concertina.net logo. Paul, who created Concertina.net is an anglo player, and back in the early days I understand the Forum was mainly inhabited by anglo players, and in fact largely those who played Irish music on the anglo. I'm pretty sure that's also when Paul created the logo, which features -- no surprise -- an anglo. Concertina.net was such a great resource, such an improvement over other places to discuss concertinas (e.g., the newsgroup rec.music.makers.squeezebox and the ICA mailing list) that fans of other types of concertina started holding their discussions here, as well. Paul, being supremely tolerant, hasn't tried to exclude us, and our membership has grown to the point that we think we're equally entitled. But it's still owned by Paul, who is not obliged to redesign his logo to include every type of concertina each of us plays, and who is spread thin enough without trying to create a line of designer concertina merchandise. In fact, there are others on the internet offering T-shirts and other merchandise with images of various different kinds of concertina. I don't have any links handy, but you should be able to find them with the help of either Google or some of our other members. Maybe you could even find an old T-shirt from Concertina & Squeezebox magazine for sale on eBay? (Sorry, mine's not for sale.)
Ken_Coles
Actually, the story as I know it is not all that deep. A few years ago I told Paul folks wanted some other choices. He said the problem was that the digital images people gave him were too low resolution to look good on those products. At that time scanners people used to digitize snapshots weren't very good, and you needed a fancy DSLR to get 8 or more megapixels. My point-and-shoot camera today has more than that. Maybe it's time for a contest or something. I even thought about this the other day. If and when we get to talk about it I'll report back. cnrobinson
Jim, I realised that! However a) I could get t-shirts from other sites, but I frequent Concertina.net, so it would be nice to reflect that in the t-shirt!, and as there are lots of people on the forum who play English and Duets it would be nice to widen the range! (Not that I don't like Anglos - I just can't get my head, or fingers, round the system!). Ken Yeah, back in the day I took the high-res photo of my own anglo to use for the designs. Now I could indeed make new designs, but frankly I don't have the time and there are very few purchases of the shirts and other stuff... I've made $21 over the past TWO years. Anyway, anyone can open their own free Cafepress shop (www.cafepress.com), so just go ahead and make your own cool designs and put them up for sale! Steve Mansfield
Whilst not wanting to impact Paul's income stream any further, there's an EC T-shirt available from Hedingham Fair at http://www.hedinghamfair.co.uk/folk_t_shirts1_1.htm I did also note that the next T-shirt on the list was also headed 'English concertina', whereas the shirt itself both features an, and is labelled on the actual shirt as, 'anglo concertina'. Confused? You will be ... That's simply an error on the website. Hedingham Fair is run by Colin and Karen Cater, and Colin is a well-known and very fine anglo player who most certainly knows the difference between the different systems. I had a little CafePress shop at my website, with lots of shirt designs, and even had a stated policy to donate all proceeds to charity (the Sally Army, of course!). I sold very few, even though there are some great designs including anglo, English and duet concertinas. I deleted the CafePress mention off my site when I redesigned it last year, but the CafePress site is still there, along with the shirt designs. Have a look: http://www.cafepress.com/sk/concertinashop . My favorite for the English concertina is still the one I've attached below. I still occasionally use the shop myself, ordering up a shirt or two for a house gift if I visit a concertina player somewhere. Proceeds still go to the Sally Army. You can still get some good concertina history books, and loads of free articles, from my own site, http://www.angloconcertina.org .
