I have my train ticket booked (LondonMidland great Escape £10 all day anywhere - on LM) - good idea if you're interested and have been put of by travelling.

Apparently they're looking for a name suggestion. Someone at work suggested "Folk Muggery" or "Trad Mugging". perhaps you could pass these along to Brian since I'm not a registered melodeonista!

ps So, Kautliya, I shall be looking out for you there - in paint and feathers as per your icon :P

No dressing up aloud! (geddit) anonymous Maol-odeon and Chou-en-concertina grey suits:

Information Sheet “Folk-Ambush” Street Event in Liverpool October 23rd 2010

Event Objective: The main objective is to surprise (ambush) with folk music and dance, to delight and entertain and to encourage dance participation among the public. The vital element of surprise means we must be spread out and not appear as a band or group in one area. It’s also important to visually look as though we are merely a group of pedestrians who happened to have our instruments or dance shoes and have just decided to perform on the spot (so no dressing up whatsoever!) In this sense we are infiltrated (for want of a better word) among the public.

The Performance: We should watch the lead player (Brian Read) for when to time beginning. Please identify Brian at registration. He will stand up, get his box out of the box, and nonchalantly stroll to the central area, and start playing.

Beginning should be in a rolling method players picking up after the previous, possibly strolling into the general area. Please do not bunch up OR stand in a circle, however groups of 2-3 will probably help to maintain the tune.

We will play the designated tunes (in the key of G) as many times as we need to fill about 10 minutes of playing time. Each tune has an A and B part of 8 bars each, we will play AABB for each tune, and repeat that pattern 3 times for each tune and then move to the other, then back ad nauseum until Brian indicates the end. He'll also do his best to indicate the tune change in the last 4 bars. This might be with the help of a helper.

The tunes are “Davy Davy Knick Knack” (4/4 - polka) and “Oyster girl” (6/8 - jig). We will start with DDKK. Try to remember the rest in the B part for DDKK.

The dancers will have to “fit” in with the speed and rhythm. We suggest that the musicians do not watch the dancers and try to “match” the rhythm as this will just result in cacophony. Try to listen to the lead and the others around in order to keep together.

“Onlookers” might want to start to dance themselves, And/or try to involve the general public (GP). They could polka to DDKK, or perhaps form a circle as for Circassian Circle, circle left and right, into the middle etc. Suggest not doing this until the music is really going well, perhaps 3-4 minutes in.

Meeting Point: Odeon Cinema (immediately outside) use escalators to reach

The location:

http://starturl.com/LTCChurchSt

This shows the route between Central Station and the Church St venue (just by Tarleton Street). However it does not properly show the Odeon cinema or Liverpool One as they have only recently been finished. However they are both well signposted, the Odeon cinema is further down Church St, then left and up some stairs or escalators (which are behind the stairs). We'll be at the top of the escalators, under the transparent wavy roof. Look for Brian with a Melodeon box and Ceppy with a clipboard!

Meeting time: 11am to register (please note this is for everyone. Please do not just show up at 12 noon for the performance). We'll need your name and instrument type for the video credits.

Transport by Rail: Lime St, (main line, 10 minutes walk) Liverpool Central (local, 5 minutes walk).

Park and Ride from Maghull (big car park) - almost end of the M58, trains every 15 minutes into Central. This is the one we are using – we expect to be there about 10:00.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maghull_railway_station

or Birchwood (off the M62), trains into Lime St every ½ hour.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birchwood_railway_station

Parking: nearest Liverpool One (but very expensive) or any of the big car parks for central Liverpool. Lots of parking at Albert dock (but expensive). Or Park and (train) Ride as above.

First performance: 12 noon in South John St, Liverpool One (main section between George Henry Lee and Debehnams) selected spot is on ground floor between Thorntons café and Blue MC shop on this and floor directly above* Lead musician Brian will stand by information map on post mid way on ground.

As this is on two floors, we want one third of musicians to be on level one, and two thirds on ground level. Those on level one must place themselves where the transparent glass barrier overlooks the ground level. Do not stand where your whole body cannot be seen. Also please can we have one dancer at this level and one on the ground

Second Performance: 1pm in Church St, on all sides of street between Kurt Geiger on one side and River Island on other. Brian will stand almost in centre of this area on Mercury manholes. Dancers please be on two different sides. Musicians do not congregate together but spread out (become peppered) among public.

Third Performance: 2pm South John St Liverpool One

Fourth Performance: 3pm Church St

Between performances there are many coffee shops, and fast food takeaways in this area. West Cornish Pasties recommended.

Baltic Fleet Pub: (optional) 3.45pm located at 33 Wapping, Liverpool, Merseyside, L1 8DQ is just 8 minutes walk. We have permission for further music sessions and food is available all day.

http://starturl.com/balticfleet

Questions in advance of event to ceppy@yourlets.biz or brianr@bjsystems.co.uk and we will do our best to answer

As we are street performers and in among big city crowds please ensure any valuables are stowed safely away where no one could easily pick pocket.

Also please be aware we have a doctor and a first aid volunteer to hand should the completely unlikely occur.

Please also note we are being filmed by our wonderful volunteer company Renaissance Film Productions, St Helens they will visit the site in advance and have plan of where they want to stand, please respect their choice and don’t try to be too close.

Looking forward to meeting you all and having a fantastic day in Liverpool!

I'm puzzled - I thought the whole idea was that this was supposed to be kept secret till the day for all except those participating ... how come it all got posted up a couple of days before the event, with a full programme etc ? Doesn't this operate against the intent of the whole thing?

This has had a lot more airing on the melodeon forum.

As I understand it, the plan was to limit the exposure outside of the music groups so that it wasn't leaked to the media, etc, in order that some sort of surprise

attack could be registered on the Liverpool shoppers this Saturday afternoon.

Obviously, it was necessary to let players know in advance, so that the performer numbers could be achieved.

I think everybody is waiting in anticipation for Brian Read to post a video of the proceedings on You Tube.

Volunteer video team said they expect to finish something in two weeks to be seen on their site http://www.renaissancefilmpro.co.uk/renaissancefilmproduction.html

In the meantime we can only hope there were some Folk there who took some Stealth photos which will make their way into the wider galaxy..... watch this invisible black hole (using English Jodrell Bank dish...........)

biggrin.gif How did it go?

MishMashMedleyonAngloEngtinasMandoGuitarFluteonBodhranHarmonicaTapppytoes all served with wooden peasant spoons to eat the Scousers   :

I thought my fingers were on display at around 3:46 - someone was certainly filming them - but I think those are Mike's! (Embarassingly, I recognised the concertina, rather than saying - that's not the "back of my hand!)

Anyhow - all went pretty well though there are obviously things that could be changed to improve matters. In the morning, people were mostly going somewhere with no time to linger. Later on, the window shoppers were out (with kids) and time to stop and listen. I learnt not to stand in front of trendy shop windows... I got elbowed aside (while playing) by a pair of girls wanting a better look at some purple suede stack heels. I also got a couple of people said nice things.

... and I probably won't want to play DDKK again for a while!

Chris

ps and I still dont know who everyone was!
